Is that a good deal? Depends in part on how much value you normally get from Amex points
Math:
To max the 40% with max of $40 you'd want to spend exactly $100
1428 points used at amazon knocks $9.97 off your bill.
So to get $100 in "stuff" you spend 1428 points and $50.03-- so your total "value" out of 1428 points is $49.97... or about 3.5 cents per point.
Which is pretty good if you normally use your Amex points for cash, hotels, or coach airfare.
It's at the very bottom-low end of ok if you normally use your Amex points for business or first class airfare via partner airlines.... I typically beat 3.5c a point for that purpose though (4-6 cents a point is more common) so probably not a deal worth doing in my case but might be for others.
Certainly much worse than the only-spend-1-point discounts.
FWIW you seem to have left out that you get $9.97 off the order for those 1428 points (Amazon redeems them at 0.7 cents a point)... so your net is $21.97 compared to using the points at your 2 cent value otherwise not $12.

edit: I can no longer use 1 points despite there being no language about minimum number of points in the fine print.
Slight adjustment to my instructions:
1. Choose payment and type in $10 in points
2. Click continue
3. Go back and adjust points to $0.01 AND make sure the toggle at the bottom of the page is toggled to "Use $40 promotional balance"
4. Click continue
I did this on the mobile app on a 2nd account and can confirm it still works.

You said this could be done infinitely, therefore you ought to be earning 2%+ on infinite money.

(I mean- MS is a thing, making 2% on an infinite amount at no cost however is not)
I cited the literal cash cost of the ticket. For direct international flights in business class.
Multiple ones, to different places, on different airlines. On different continents.
So did the other guy who also corrected you on this.

Pawn shops ALSO don't pay top dollar, but citing their offers doesn't mean that's the true value of the thing they're making an offer on.
In the meantime when used for my own travel and for the friends and family I buy tickets for there's no risk at all--- and I get the typical 4-6 cents a point I've given you multiple, factual, examples of (even a bit higher with the Japan ones I mentioned)

Let me show you how obscenely bad YOUR math is---
That ticket to Peru I recently flew.... at only 1.3c a point, 75000 points is $975.
Please cite to me where I can pay $975 cash, total, for a non-stop roundtrip business class flight on LATAM between Miami and Lima in June.

Likewise, 85k points for the ANA flight, at 1.3 cents that's $1105.
Please show me where I can pay $1105, total all in, for a roundtrip flight on ANA in The Room between JFK and Haneda, in October.

Heck if you hold the right card (Amex biz plat or centurion) even AMEX gives you more than 1.3 cents a point for MR on business class purchases direct in their portal (effectively 1.54 cents a point on the Plat card, effectively 2 cents a point if you hold a centurion card)- but obviously you can do far better via partner airline transfers.
Likewise over in the UR ecosystem, with a CSR Chase will give you 1.5c a point in their travel portal... but again much better via point transfers to airlines... and unlike Amex they even have a hotel partner that beats that, UR goes to Hyatt 1:1 and Hyatt points can routinely net you 2-2.5c per point vs the cash price of whatever you're booking.... I don't use UR for Hyatt simply because I get so much more value on biz class air tickets, but it's still a lot better than your values.
You mean like how you claim (but won't provide any details) on how you're allegedly making 2% profit on infinite MS yet not the richest guy on earth?
Again though, buying "as much as I could" makes no sense--- because I'm not taking international business and first class flights on a daily basis.
I'm taking them a handful of times a year. So I've already got plenty from SUBs and spending. WITHOUT having to "buy" them. Making your idea, once again, mathematically worse than mine.
Nor do I make a "profit" by getting a flight at a large discount using points--- I simply save the cash the flight would otherwise cost me.
You keep using the word economics while making it clear you have no understanding of the topic.

Now to find out what is "eligible"
Edit just tried it and even if i select $1 worth of points it gives me the full 50% discount up to $75.
Biggest issue right now is i have no idea what to get and i want to get it before they change their mind on allowing me to only use $1 in points.
