Smith machines dont wow me. Seems like they make the movements too linear. Change my mind?

Muscle isolation
The guided movement of the barbell reduces the need for stabilizing muscles, which can help isolate specific muscle groups. This can be useful for isolation exercises that target individual muscles for growth and definition.

Stability
Smith machines move on a fixed plane of motion, which can provide more stability than free weights. This can help you produce more force, which can be important for building muscle or increasing strength.

Safety
The rack can act as a spotter, making solo lifting safer.

Heavier weights
Because the Smith machine eliminates the need for stabilizing muscles, it can be easier to lift heavier weights while maintaining body control.

Mind-muscle connection
Without the distraction of worrying about heavy weights on a bar, you can focus on contracting your muscles and having a mind-muscle connection.

Flexibility
Smith machine squats can help strengthen the muscles around your hips and knees, which can help maintain or improve their full range of motion and flexibility.

From my perspective "Muscle Isolation," "Stability," and "Heavier Weights" are actually cons because I believe functional, complex movements are superior to isolation exercises. I see the value of isolation for body building and rehab/PT. But my main sport is BJJ, and there's nothing very linear or isolated about it.

"Safety" seems a minor point; I use spotter arms for barbell bench and squat. Can you even do a overhead shoulder press on a Smith?

"Flexibility" seems like a hollow statement / a statement that applies to all squats.

So, "Mind-muscle connection" may be legit (I couldn't say if the Smith helps this or not, but I guess i understand the argument). And, "Safety" may be semi-legit. And of course safety is important. Seems the cons still outweigh the pros

Thanks for the input

PS Im not arguing, just processing out loud and giving my feedback/opinion. The thanks was sincere

There's a place for most workout equipment just depends on your needs. Smith machine might not be for you but the cables would be good but then I don't think I'd consider this if I was mainly looking for cables. Smith machines can help overcoming a plateau or great way to introduce someone into weight lifting and part of that is there they appear to be safer than free weights. You can do overhead shoulder press with a smith machine. I think the flexibility aspect is because you can do deeper movements due to the muscle isolation going on.

I have this as my garage gym and it's a fantastic piece of equipment. The smith part is for the safety of my kids using it and when i want to isolate my legs or feel a bit safer trying more weight. This is a great price and a bit cheaper than i paid...
