The charging issue was caused by the original bios setting. The recent update solved this problem

Very few single tasks would require more than 32 GB of RAM. You're more likely to have a CPU bottleneck in those cases. Handling multiple tasks at once that use lots of system memory could come close to reaching the max level of available memory, but it's doubtful you will even feel a difference. Looks like this laptop allows for upgrading the RAM if you ever felt it necessary.

Gaming requires GPU speed + VRAM + system RAM. GPU VRAM is important but it's not the sole determination of gaming performance. If a GPU is slow, more VRAM will not make it better than a faster GPU with less VRAM. Without sufficient system RAM you may encounter stuttering.

With this system, the GPU is good but not fast enough for the VRAM to be it's bottleneck in high resolution gaming.

Finally, your comment about the weight. Let's be realistic, you're going to be hard pressed to find a 16" laptop with a dedicated GPU and swappable RAM that's thin and under 4lbs for anywhere in the ballpark of this price.

Is 32 GB RAM enough for the most memory-demanding graphics/video editing applications and also games?

From what I understand, graphically-taxing applications and games rely on VRAM (GPU memory) and not regular RAM. Is that correct?

I guess my question is --- Are there any graphically-intensive tasks or games that would require more than 32 GB of RAM?

Yes, 32 GB of RAM is generally sufficient for most memory-demanding graphics/video editing applications and modern games. While graphically-intensive applications and games rely heavily on VRAM (GPU memory), they also benefit from ample regular RAM, especially for tasks like editing 4K footage, running virtual machines (VMs), and multitasking.

For graphically-intensive tasks and games:
  • Graphics and Video Editing: Applications like Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and DaVinci Resolve can consume significant RAM, especially when working with 4K or higher resolution footage. 32 GB should be adequate for most projects, but for extremely large projects or those involving complex effects, more RAM could be beneficial.
  • Gaming: Modern games typically use more VRAM than regular RAM, but having 32 GB of RAM ensures smooth performance and allows for background processes to run without impacting gameplay.

I am wondering if this laptop wouldn't heat up too much during gaming due to its thin profile. Anyone with experience on this?

It does not get hotter than any other Intel laptops with similar spec. One of the main reason is that like all other Thin productivity oriented laptops, the performance profiles are not as aggressive as a full-fledged Gaming laptop. The CPU does perform a bit slower than gaming laptops with same CPU and the GPU, during combined CPU and GPU load, runs at 80W (100W is max for RTX 4060 realistically dur to Nvidia's voltage limit).
But in its own category, this laptop is faster than XPS 15 and Samsung Galaxy book 3 Ultra

Thanks for the insight. I have already purchased an Omen 16.1 from Costco (unopened) and am deciding whether to get this one instead. Seems a good deal but the potential temperature issue was keeping me a bit hesitant.

Never heard of this spec. Why is it important?

If main objective is gaming then Omen is a better choice.

Lots of good feedback in the thread below from last year, when this same product (i9 processor, less RAM, less SSD) hit $1099 a few times from Best Buy.

Biggest negative is USB C charging is not allowed (reported as software "gimped" somehow) at all when the laptop is on. Only when it's off does it charge via USB C.

Which comment you're exactly referring? I, for a fact, know that it charges via USB-C while using the laptop and used 100W PD 3.0 charger multiple time.
The reason some couldn't charge it while operating may be either they were using very low wattage charger or some incompatible charger with higher wattage, using custom protocols. In those cases normally the laptop only accept a far lower wattage from the charger, for safely.

So is the GPUs' performance not hindered as much as the CPU for being thin?
