Very few single tasks would require more than 32 GB of RAM. You're more likely to have a CPU bottleneck in those cases. Handling multiple tasks at once that use lots of system memory could come close to reaching the max level of available memory, but it's doubtful you will even feel a difference. Looks like this laptop allows for upgrading the RAM if you ever felt it necessary.

Gaming requires GPU speed + VRAM + system RAM. GPU VRAM is important but it's not the sole determination of gaming performance. If a GPU is slow, more VRAM will not make it better than a faster GPU with less VRAM. Without sufficient system RAM you may encounter stuttering.

With this system, the GPU is good but not fast enough for the VRAM to be it's bottleneck in high resolution gaming.

Finally, your comment about the weight. Let's be realistic, you're going to be hard pressed to find a 16" laptop with a dedicated GPU and swappable RAM that's thin and under 4lbs for anywhere in the ballpark of this price.

yeah thats a deal breaker for me. im gonna be hauling this thing daily. i get that with its screensize and dedicated GPU, its hard to find a laptop that weighs less. im willing to sacrifice screen size and GPU for weight..

The reason some couldn't charge it while operating may be either they were using very low wattage charger or some incompatible charger with higher wattage, using custom protocols. In those cases normally the laptop only accept a far lower wattage from the charger, for safely.

That seriously depends on the user. 32 GB is enough for most tasks including games and videos. May have to pay attention to memory management at times to optimize what you're doing.

This looks like the winner for me. Wished it had oled but can't win them all

90w GPU. Basically full power.

VRR display at 120hz means no screen tearing. Touchscreen means it's quite a bit more durable.

2TB SSD and 32G RAM means no need to upgrade. Perfect for my 3d modeling and gaming old games (Skyrim, cyberpunk, Battletech)

Is price a concern for you? If not, then you have options for less-weight laptops (4 lbs and less) .

Yeah, I was using 4omni. I still typed it out and had it improve what I wrote. Whats written is still true, though. As an engineering student by night, I find 32gb has been more than enough for all my tasks required by my coursework.

I know desktops but know absolutely nothing about laptops so feel I need a bit of advice.

Would this laptop work well for a new college student (daughter) who games a little?

She's lifted some 5lb or so laptops and think they wouldn't be a problem at all to carry around campus.

I guess the main worry would be battery life for the days classes (no gaming of course).

bought the i9 deal from best buy last year. added a second ssd (make sure to low format first before installing) hp support was crap but the machine was great. Upped to 64 gigs ram. It does run hot playing civ VI and shooters. Not something you want to curl up with on a hot day. The speakers got a little fuzzy when I opened the machine for the upgrade but after a little work its ok again. Everything else has been much better than I expected. I would give this machine 95/100 despite the terrible support HP wanted to charge me for that I figured out on my own.

Can you provide any info on this?

I have the same laptop from the deal 1 year ago and can't get usb-c charging to work unless the laptop is completely powered off. I have what I believe is the latest bios (F.20-03/14/2024). I tried looking for a more recent bios update but couldn't find one. When looking at the bios settings, I see an option to enable USB-C charging (which I have enabled) but it explicitly says "Allow system to charge the USB device such as mobile phone in S4 (hibernation) or S5 (off) state." That sounds like it's for letting the computer charge other devices but I have it on anyways.

I'm using an OEM Dell 130W USB-C charger that I bought from Dell. It's not an HP charger but it should have sufficient power and it does charge the laptop when it is powered down so the charger itself works.

Apparently, the Lenovo 135w one can charge this laptop. I can update you in a few weeks when I get the charger.

Also, Reddit says theres a workaround/hack, I haven't received my laptop yet but it goes like this:
  1. insert AC adapter
  2. Insert 65w USBC charger (in your case 150w)
  3. Unplug AC adapter
