So I'm FAR from the expert here but I've been trying out 34-35" curved monitors for the last couple of months (did the LG for $250 from Staples, the Gigabyte for $300 from Best Buy, and now I have the 35" from Costco you mentioned) so I'll just give my input here.

As a non-gamer, exclusively using as a WFH "productivity" monitor…I literally notice zero difference between all of them! Honestly the only thing I've noticed is that, indeed, there's a slight bit more real estate on the 35" (duh) and the speakers on the 35 are actually pretty good. The LG from Staples, I believe, had the built in hub, but since I never used it I can't speak to it.

I've had the 35 for a week and at this point I think it's a keeper. My only additional note is, with Costco, I get 3 months to see if something better comes along, otherwise I'm definitely happy with this one!

Tempting. Think the 100hz vs 144/165hz would matter to a casual non FPS gamer?

No, and you could probably overclock the monitor another 10-15% if needed

I used a 60-75Hz monitor for gaming as long as I can remember until last year, and it was fine for me. 100Hz should be plenty, if you don't know the difference, especially at this low price.

This or the Acer Nitro 34" UWQHD ($299 at Costco) or the LG 35' UltraWide Curved WQHD HDR10 ($279 at Costco) for a non-gamer?

Is VA a non-issue when they're curved? (And only ever viewing from straight on)

I just can't do VA anymore, especially for working. The effect/ghosting they ALL display when scrolling down on a text heavy page or white text on black backgrounds (common for programmers) is just too much for me. For general gaming you don't notice it as much, but regardless I'm IPS from now on.

Does anybody know why manufacturers try to hide the panel type when it is VA but put it in the title of the product when it is IPS? I did not find any mention of the panel type, either in the Amazon listing or on the ASUS website itself. I see it is mentioned in the spec section here, but I was trying to find it on their own website.

It sort of depends. VA and IPS are definitely superior to TN panels. It really comes down more to the quality of the panel when comparing, and use cases. IPS is often considered the higher quality monitor for better color gamut when comparing models in the same budget category.

Contrast on VA panels is always better, but color richness in IPS is often more obvious, especially in dark rooms. VA panels tend to have worse ghosting issues, but the higher end VA panels by Samsung don't really. Cheaper VA panels are often accused of being more blurry as a result.

This is the REAL problem with comparing VA and IPS, it's that the tech wildly varies from low to mid range. Previously, IPS dominated the mid-range world, but so much research and development has gone into VA tech because it's so popular with televisions with the far superior black levels that I'd say VA had almost completely supplanted IPS in the mid range. The higher end VAs imo, are superior to IPS in almost every way, but the problem is the low end VA panels are often much worse.

So, you really just need to so solid research. As someone who buys typically only higher end monitors, I prefer the newer VA stuff over IPS, and I say this as a guy who would ONLY buy IPS probably 6 to 8 years back. This model is mid range and really, imo, just makes the pros and cons comparablr to the pros and cons of IPS. Both are fine.

IPS still has the marketing mindshare of the public as being considered higher end, though mayne thisnis outdated info, but that's probably why they still advertise it front and center on boxes.

Anyone have a simple explanation of how the QHD Ultra Wide 1440p resolution compares to 4k or 5k monitors?

It's technically half the dots per inch of 4k, but it's a bit more than a 2k screen because the width means more pixels on the sides. Subjectively I would say my different 35" LG model 35WN65C-B looks nice and crisp because it has over 100 dots per inch, feels like a substantial upgrade over my "FullHD" 1080p monitor I just replaced. I can comfortably fit 3 web browser windows side-by-side, so it feels like having two 4:3 aspect monitors side by section de except there's no seam between them. My 90 Hz Steam Deck OLED was a nice upgrade over 60 hz screens; the higher the refresh rate the less you're able to perceive gains. I think at 100Hz it's more noticeable to have a variable refresh rate like FreeSync or G-Sync than more hertz/fps. My VA screen looks great to me; my old IPS monitor exaggerated red colors, but this new monitor supports HDR10 for more colors at higher brightness while the VA tech ensures very dark blacks, basically second only to OLED. My Mac mini correctly recognizes the monitor and sends a native 1440p signal to it.

Mine does have a USB hub, which is great for my keyboard and wireless game controller (my mouse receiver dongle plugs into my keyboard and is also wireless), but unfortunately no USB-C video input or power delivery. USB-C input and power would be great: I could connect and charge my Laptop, tablet, or Steam Deck with one cable, then it would have charged my mobile device, added video, keyboard, mouse, and controllers for an instant "docked" experience, and make it easy to share all these USB hub peripherals between my devices. Another "con" for my monitor, for some weird reason my PlayStation 5 perceives it as a 4k monitor but a 1440p option is disabled, though the monitor can re-sample 4k video to display at 1440P/2k.
