"The power strip comes with a 720 Joules rating, and automatic shutdown technology stops power to devices when surge protection expires"

Ummm, WTF? My understanding of most basic surge protectors is that they will just become an outlet extension once the surge protection runs its course. More premium surge protectors come with a green light indicator to let users know whether or not their devices are still protected. I've never seen a power strip that has surge protection marketed to "stop power to devices when surge protection expires". Does this just stop working altogether once it reaches its surge protection capacity? If that is how the product works with only 720 joules of protection, they should keep this product at this price or lower because it will just be completely useless if you happen to use it somewhere that surges may be even relatively common.

I had a Phillips smart surge protector die on me without any actual surge. I just bumped it when I went to reach for the power switch, it died, and somehow it's totally done - it simply won't come back on again. I don't think I'll buy another Phillips after that.

That's exactly what a surge protector is supposed to do (disconnect the outlets if there's a surge)! It actually surprises me that this dollar store variety device actually works as it's supposed to!....supposedly, that is! Then again, with a rating of 720 joules, it's basically useless anyway!

That's not the reason to not purchase this! That's exactly how a properly designed surge protector is supposed to work! I wouldn't recommend this one regardless, as it's a low quality product with an unacceptable joule rating!

If you're still looking for a surge protector with better ratings, 1080 Joules, plus 2x USB-A and 2x USB-c connections, this is currently on sale on Amazon at $9 https://a.co/d/0cS20gpz

This is a generic product, and the quality is highly questionable! Highly rated on Amazon primarily because it's cheap (and likely at this sale price routinely)! Price shouldn't dictate which surge protector you choose, as it's intended to protect potentially costly electronics and not set your house on fire if it's overloaded (or malfunctions)! This has one joule rating in one part of the description (1080) and another under "specifications" (900)! It's also rated for 13 amps, which means that it has a higher gauge power cord (lower is better) and could potentially be overloaded (depending upon individual needs/use)! I would definitely avoid it!
It's also best not to rely upon a surge protector device for USB charging purposes. The usefulness and quality are generally substandard (as compared with a separate, higher quality USB charger).

When it comes to surge protectors, avoid cheap, "dime a dozen" generics such as this and stick with name brands! Here's something to consider. It's just a few bucks more and actually very inexpensive (for a better quality, safer and more reliable name brand product). There are upgraded "APC" models as well (if your needs vary).

Most people aren't looking for surge protection so much as a power strip, that's why it's rated highly.

That's a valid point....but then why not purchase a basic power strip, although you need to be very cautious about those as well! They should be UL approved (or ETL at the very least) and rated for no less than 15 amps.
It's actually better to use a name brand, inexpensive surge protector (such as the APC above), since basic power strips are typically of lesser quality (and less safe)!
Additionally, the majority of these types of devices have some level of surge protection (even if it's basically useless), simply because it gets more attention and sells better!

In for one.

Need a low profile plug for an outlet behind a dresser.

Don't care if the humidifier plugged into it doesn't have the highest level of surge protection, lol

Is it bad to connect a surge protector to another surge protector?

No, it is not how a surge protector works. Done have safeguards in place that act like breakers and can cut power to devices if there is a large enough surge as a protective feature. This device states that it has surge protection built in but will stop powering devices once the built in protection is used up. This implies that it essentially becomes an extension cord that no longer provides power to anything plugged into it simply because it can no longer protect them from surges
