Funny, I had an hvac company come out about a year ago and a mini split (forget all the specs, sorry) was like $10k for 1 unit.

What do we do here? DIY install and then have someone who is licensed come deal with the coolant?

The compressor comes charged with freon. The line sets can't have any air, humidity, or containments in them so once you get everything installed you either hook up a vacuum pump or use a "flush kit" which pioneer sells. I've never used the flush kit. With the vacuum pump I let it run 15-30 minutes then turn it off and let the system sit a couple hours. If the system still has the same vacuum level after a sitting for a while you know there are no leaks and then turn a screw to release the refrigerant into the lines.

I have the MrCool 4 zone 36k for my house and the lines come pre charged so you just connect and go. It's convenient and I've had a great experience with the system but they have raised their prices so much I'd rather just vac the system. I'm not a HVAC tech but I've DIYd car A/C and commercial refrigeration repairs now and IMO it's pretty easy stuff.

Yeah I installed one last year, it was really easy. I did the vacuum pump too, ran it for 45 minutes to be extra safe. It's been running since. The only real issue with my pioneer unit is the plastic that flips up on the internal unit, so you can work on it, sometimes vibrates a little and makes an annoying noise. Not super loud, but definitely noticeable. I plan on either putting some weight on it to keep it held down, or just tape it to the lower part.

Am pretty handy but haven't done anything like this. Could have swore I read some time ago that a licensed person needed to deal with part of it if one wanted warranties to be kept.

I'd def rather DIY this but not so sure about this particular unit itself. Have to do more research.

The tricky part is getting all the right fittings to do the vacuum pull. And having a digital vacuum gauge helped me determine if I have a good sealed system prior to releasing the refrigerant.

Yeah, I've read a bunch of conflicting things.

Not about to pay $10k for 1 unit if I can do it for around $2-3k.

Just installed a 24k diamante ultra... Amazing unit... Good deal for 36k just no Wi-Fi (sold separately) and not energy star rated so can't do federal rebate I don't think... Install is not for the faint of heart.

Fyi warranty is NOT voided for diy install of these pioneer units, had confirmed with pioneer myself. Mr cool is an easier diy for the fact that the lineset comes pre charged while these do not necessitating vacuuming the lineset to remove impurities and testing for leaks. However Mr cool is plenty more expensive so depends if that's worth it for you

I've had the same experience after seeing these DIY MrCool posts for years for an all in of closer to 2k. Is that margin pretty standard for central air systems as well?

I understand labor, insurance, etc costs. These just seem like an excellent option for someone who is handy.

I'm not sure about central air. I didn't bother with quotes for that, only ductless mini-splits.

My attic is wide open and a prime candidate for central air but I'd rather mini-splits.

I'm handy but these have me second guessing all of the time due to the warranty. I'd obviously want the warranty intact.

I'm not sure how these perform vs various Mitsubishi units.
