Awesome case! Managed to fit a 4090FE in it, watch the base on vertical orientation. If it gets too heavy, the base's support legs can buckle.

Good question. PCs made by vendors tend to be lacking when it comes to expansion and customization. A Dell SFF or MFF can be an excellent value. But going that route may limit your options. Or you may pay for hardware you don't want, like an under-powered PSU or motherboard with the wrong chipset.

A case like this isn't a "One PC" case. It should allow you to have confidence that you can repurpose it in a few years when your wants or needs change. Most of the PC cases I've purchased have housed 3+ motherboards in their lifetimes. The exception being the NAS case I purchased within the last year. It will be several years before I feel the desire to upgrade it.

Neither this case nor a refurbished system are bad options. They are just different paths. Especially for hobbits who like to tinker. My homelab is a mix of Frankensteined and prebuilt systems.

I was told by an expert not trying to put a decent GPU into a mini case.
I've built pcs for decades. Let me tell you this...it's fine. I wouldn't try to squeeze a 4070 into this case but there are very capable cards that are smaller and less power hungry, like even the intel arc series.

How much would a decent build cost me?

I run a 4080Super in one, and it is great for my use case. Seems to stay cooler than the H1 V2 that it replaced, for space reasons.

Anyone installing a GPU requiring the new Nvidia connector, be careful to get a PSU that has those cables specifically, which are usually the higher wattage PSUs. I had a lot of system instability or even failure to boot since I undersized my PSU even if the system was within wattage limits.

4070 runs just fine in this case! I have it in reverse horizontal mode (GPU on the bottom), using stock case fans, and the GPU temps are surprisingly low.
Current gen AMD CPUs all run hot, but those temps are fine too. (I've got an axp90-x53 full copper cooler on a 7600x.) The only thing running hotter than I'm comfortable with is actually my SSD. Need to play around with the heat sink and see if I can bring it down a bit.

A decent build with a 4070 super, AMD 7600, 2 TB SSD and 32 GB RAM would be under 1500 based on my prices from two months ago.

if you really like the x3d CPUs, you could build with a 5700x3d for about the same.

Did two builds in this case, 7900XT and 3080. GPU temps are good with the side fans (used 140mm slim on both). The CPU area is limited to low profile coolers and gets hot. I ran a 5800x3d and 12600T I had lying around from a server, with the AXP67 someone else mentioned and ID cooling 55 in the 2nd. There's very little room for exhaust airflow in horizontal mode in the cpu area, otherwise a fantastic case that looks great in a living room as an HTPC case.

Another plus for the GPU area is you can easily zip-tie 1-3 60mm fans at the top. I run my side fans as intake blowing onto the GPU, and 3 exhaust 60mm noctuas blowing air out of the top.

Man, wish I didn't miss this sale. Was looking to build in this case or the revolt 3. But really like this one.
