Proctor and Gambles marketing department is blurring the difference so that the casual observer doesn't notice. They are selling a cheaper version of detergent at a cheaper price but making you think you are getting the better version of detergent. And corporations wonder why there is consumer backlash against their tactics.
Not worth it.
It's not "watered down" as some claim. While Simply lacks enzymes, it does have detergents and solvents to handle those stains, albeit less effectively. That's fine for most people since most people don't have to deal with blood, grass, wine and chocolate stains on a regular basis.
I use budget detergent for my regular wash but use the premium stuff (and/or pretreaters) when I have especially dirty and smelly clothes. In summary, this is fine for most people if you want to save a few bucks. But if you have a lot of organic stains all the time, use something with enzymes. For example, if you have kids who are constantly spilling their food or grandma who no longer wants to go to bathroom like regular people.

Tide Free and Gentle is the non-fragrant, no-dye version of Tide original for people who avoid those. These came in White containers.
The confusion here is because Tide 'Simply' (the value sub-brand) also now has a no-dye, no-fragrance version they call 'Simply and Free' and sneakily also comes in a white container. But the 'simply' term in the name as well as the lesser price makes it clear that this is indeed a lesser-performing product. (For example, the Yellow container Tide Simply is also on sale for the same price)
Yeah, hate P&G for their intentionally confusing packaging to make you believe that you're getting the premium product while in fact you're not.

You can prove that they are equally concentrated because you use the same amount per load (the small amount of added enzymes doesn't change the volume). As an extreme example of this concept, compare Tide Free and Gentle with their top-of-the-line Heavy Duty 10x. You actually have to use more of the Heavy Duty per load because of all the extra cleaning ingredients it has. That's why the Heavy Duty measuring cap is larger with markings to match. But you can't argue that the Heavy Duty is less concentrated or watered down.

Yes it is shady. There's a reason the word Tide is full size and simply is very small.
They are selling a product that should be dollar store branded for a premium price by adding a premium name to it.
This is a garbage product and only reason it sells is they slap the word "Tide" to it in large letters.

The word "simply" is the about same size as "free and clear" on the other version.
