Whiteside Model UDC9112 Spiral Combination 1/2" SH X 7/8" D X 1-1/8"CL

Bought this three months ago with the last deal from routerbitworld. It's a magnificent router bit for templates and incredibly smooth flush trimming. You'll need a full sized router that accepts a 1/2" shank and preferably a router table to make the most of it. This is the size most recommended by Katz-Moses and others. At this price, it's well worth it over the Bits Bits coating.

Happy woodworking!

I bought this bit about 3 weeks ago on Amazon for this price. Based on my research at the time I think the $254 price is inflated but it's still a great bit.

For those that haven't used anything but a straight flute bit, this is LIFE CHANGING. I got an order for 26 round charcuterie boards and this thing did a stellar job at template routing after the bandsaw. The only tearout I had were on the first few boards when I was still getting used to it. Run it at the right speed, don't take off too much, and be sure to use that little screw-in peg on your router table to ease into the cut.

I think I would still spend for the Astra coated. It's only 200 right now.

Is it worth the extra cost for hobby work? presumably the extra durability really comes in handy in a production shop where it's being used like 10 times as much as a hobbyist might

This is really hard to gauge. I use my flattening bit about 12 hours a month. I couldn't imagine using this one for more than an 30 minutes a month. So ... Now that you point that out probably not.
