I did have an Apple TV subscription trial on my Smart TV, but it lapsed.
I really don't want to use a phone to play 4K content, I'd like to play it on the "big screen".

I bought 2 movies from Amazon at 4.99 each, just chat to get the money back.

As I recall I could access my library through the TV app, at least when I had a subscription. I suppose I can always access it, well as long as my account is valid.
Well, tried the TV app and after updating my credit card I was able to buy it right on the TV, and after an account credit it cost me $2.81 for this 4-movie collection. Woohoo!
In fact, if there is Atmos audio available for a title, iTunes will play it back even if it's only HD which is why the MA codes I'd cashed in at Vudu have Atmos and HD video on iTunes.
I have John Wick 1 & 3 in 4K at iTunes and John Wick 2 in 4K at Vudu/Fandango at Home and all are DV and Atmos.
The last time I went to the movies was for JW4 last year and having an OLED really makes you hate normal movie theaters with their dim, low contrast, blah image quality . We used to go almost weekly, then monthly, and after the world ended we have been only three times since Feb. 2020 and I've gone only twice more alone. Movies are available at home in 4K in just a few weeks, so why rush out for a subpar experience?

I have an iPad and iTunes on my PC/laptop so I use those to buy things. You can playback on the Apple TV app, BUT you can only access the feature film itself in your library. Any iTunes Extras (commentaries, featurettes, alternate cuts like how Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut includes the Theatrical & Redux cuts as well) are only accessible via an iDevice or iTunes on PC. If you're a big movie buff, it's worth getting a hardware Apple TV device just for the full access to iTunes content.
