It's getting worse. Now it tends to add "By the way ..." or "Did you know ..." at the end of the conversation more often than ever. My Echo Show also displays sponsored product ads every a while. I'm not buying a device to show their ads in my home.
Lots of great little devices but unfortunately Alexa is the same shit show it was in 2009. Amazon has done nothing to improve Alexa in the last 12 years.
Ok, Alexa.

Alexa is quite different than she was back then. Perhaps the configuration of your network is preventing your devices from updating?

As some very basic points, she has more natural human cadence and vocal tone, you don't need the wake word per request, and she can distinguish between voices.

It is important to understand that Alexa isn't an AI. She is a personal assistant that translates speech to text, does a keyword search against various databases, and returns the result via text-to-speech. She is limited by the databases that Amazon provides and the databases that you link her to via apps. When she gets things wrong, I have found that is largely due to colloquialisms that I use that are not programmed into her keywords or are keywords via the app. You can, though, program her via the Alexa app to associate various colloquialisms with specific actions.

I'm curious, what improvements were you're looking for in the past 12 years?

If Amazon is going to start charging for Alexa services...all of these devices that I have will be going to the bin.

"Alexa, weather forecast."

"Alexa, weather FORECAST!"
…"Currently, it's 70 degrees outside."

"Alexa, weather forecast in (my town)."
…"Currelty, it's 70 degrees outside. Today, look for sunny sky…"

Should rename it Dumblexa…

That's odd... Alexa gives me the (short) forecast even though I only ask for the temperature.

I'd really like an indoor + outdoor temp (on a Dot, I don't think the Pop has a temp sensor) in one command. I guess I could build a routine for that, if I could get her to drop the mini-forecast.

I feel that maybe the colloquialisms aren't colloquial enough and need to be more colloquialistic to surmise the colloquialalitty of everything

I don't understand why they advertise the sound specifically. It's pretty poor, similar to the puck shaped Dot. I don't know if they just modified the case, but it seems/sounds like it.

The sound on the sphere Dot is much better. Still a tiny speaker, with sound not as it's core function, but it's tolerable. (My wife doesn't get that when she tells Alexa just to play music, it comes out of Alexa instead of the Sonos speakers.)

One thing I miss having is the following:

"Alexa, are the upstairs lights off?"

It responds expectedly to "Alexa, turn off the upstairs light" and "Alexa, turn on the upstairs lights."

Just replaced every Alexa device in my house with HomePods. Night and day (still not perfect though) compared to that crazy lady.

Not the person you asked, but her speech recognition hasn't gotten any better. I still stand in the dark kitchen having to ask her 4 times to turn on the kitchen lights before she gets it. So frustrating. She gets cursed at frequently.

Do some research on the new paid service before complaining. The existing features will still be free so if you want to dump your devices, I suggest you dumping it now
