You may be fine with a 30

"A beginning rule of thumb is that you want a minimum of 2lbs of thrust for every 100lbs. For example, if you have a 3000lb boat, fully loaded, then the calculation is (3000/100) x 2 = 60lbs of thrust. "

Try it and return if it doesn't work out.

I bout a Newport 36lb for $139 off amazon a couple weeks ago for my kayak and have only taken it outta the box. Any downsides to this MotorGuide? (I've never heard of that brand) $50 cheaper is good.

Rated well on Amazon as well as Cabela's and Bass Pro.

I have a Cabela's account - so I don't see $10 off for email signup - so if you already have an account, you can't get discount?

I also opened in Incognito using Edge while signed out of my account - still not discount offer. Is this random?

If no one is going to use their $10 off code can you PM me. I would appreciate the SD assist :-)

Motor guide is a good brand, I wouldn't be concerned there.

However, if I recall correctly the Newport may have a couple advantages worth the extra.

First I'm pretty sure the Newport is lighter weight, which is a plus for kayak use.

2nd the Newport is specifically saltwater rated where as the MG is stated as freshwater use. I'm sure the MG would be fine with some proper care in SW, but if you plan to use it in SW, I'd feel better having the NP. If your only use is FW, either would be fine, but it argue the NP is still better option.

OP thanks for the post. It seems like the 55lb is not available for ship or in store near me. Really wanted to try this out. I'm a bit worried going with 30LB. I have a blow-up raft and I think I need the 55lb. #sadface

The free shipping really makes this deal work. GOod little motor, but be careful in salt/brackish water. Doesn't last long.

Not sure if it helps but the motor I use for my 21' pontoon boat is 55lbs of thrust. It's not ideal, especially on a windy day, but it does the job for fishing calmer waters with 5-6 people and ice chests full. Thinking 30 may be ok for you?

Does this need additional mount to connect to my kayak/boat?
