There's a battery tab on each brand new airtag that needs to be pulled before it can be used.

So, I don't think the batteries are active until you pull that tab, so they should be fine for your trip next year, as long as you don't pull the tabs until you actually need to use the airtags.

Once pulled, the batteries should last for about a year or so, until they eventually die and need to be replaced. Batteries for airtags are fairly common and easy to get.
