Only Midnight color is $799. Other colors are still $899.
Better deal with Apple Education Discount $150 Apple Gift Card.
I just checked and it looks like all the colors are now $799. I think Apple.com's could be the better deal but in my case, Best Buy (who also has this on sale - and that thread has more activity worth reading before buying) is giving me a lot for my trade-in 2019 Intel 16" MacBook Pro so that'd be the way for me to go.

8gb ram and 256gb storage in 2024 is unacceptable...my phone has the same specs
lol at being thumbs downed for this comment, when it's absolutely true, and laughable that they get away with this on a $1000 msrp machine. some apple owners just love drinking the juice and making excuses..

I have the 2020 MacBook Air with 8/256GB. It has worked great for general surfing to simpler games like Civilization VI. However, as happy as I am with it, I would agree that 8GB RAM in 2024 is ridiculous. It's literally a few dollars for Apple to upgrade to 16GB. Charging us $200(?) for an 8GB upgrade is ridiculous.

i WISH i could get that extra 8gb for just $200.. wherever i try to just upgrade that ram, it actually ends up being another $400 since the macbooks are always spec'd with 512 storage instead of 256... that upgrade model is a very steep and slippery slope.

You can get the 16GB for $200 more without upgrading the drive from 256 to 512GB. They don't make it obvious because they put 8/256 and 16/512 up front, as if that was your only two options. Select the 8/256 and then upgrade to 16GB RAM for $200. Upgrading from 8GB to 16GB also comes with upgrading the GPU from 8 to 10 core at no "extra" cost.

I see that option on apple.com, but not the discounted links for amazon, best buy, or apple edu. Can you please link me if its $1k total for the M2 13in 16/256 somewhere?

Go to the Apple Edu store. The M3 16/256GB with the 10-core GPU will be $1,199 but you will get a $150 Apple gift card. Apple Care will be 20% cheaper if you want that and the software is also cheaper.
Edit: The M2 with 16GB is also available at $1,079 with the $150 Apple gift card.

Do NOT get the M2 base config (8gb ram 256gb SSD). Your SSD speeds will suffer due to Apple's choice to use a single chip SSD ONLY on the 256gb M2 model. Instead of the dual SSD-chip setup on the M1 and M3 base configs. Either 1) pay more to get the 512gb SSD version M2 (the higher capacity version does not suffer this same handicap 2) spend a little more to get the base config of 256gb M3, or 3) save money and stick with the M1 8gb ram 256gb SSD.
