Its a new standard that unites all home automation protocols together on one platform:

There have been many home automation protocols over the years (think zigbee, z-wave, etc) and many manufacturers that out their own spin on it (Amazon, Google, Apple Homekit, etc.). Matter is the standard by which they've all agreed to play nicely together.

I can confirm all my kasa hardware operated properly in the Tapo app. The devices I added previously in the kasa app still function equally in both apps. If kasa items are added in the Tapo app, they are not backwards added into the kasa app. Overall I am pleased with the transition and these devices have been very stable for over 2 years.

I still really cant comprehend hat they are trying to do with Kasa and Tapo ... Are they supposd to be different identities? Higher end and lower end? It seems like Kasa is backburner now yet there are still a few developments here and there.

Yeah, both are still available for now - and appear to coexist if running Tapo. I guess that could change later as matter compliance could play a bigger role in home automation. For me, for now, all works well and I don't have a need to start replacing old hardware *yet*.
