Every single time I'm building flat-pack furniture (ikea, closetmaid, Wayfair…) I take the Allen they provide and go find the equivalent hex bit for my ratchet. Soooo much easier.

And differential fluid changes on German cars, of course. Assuming it's not a tamper-proof Torx or triple square, that is…

I use them for a number of tasks, but primarily for my mountain bike.

If only getting one set, is it more practical to get the metric set for bikes and furniture assembly?

When I replaced my spark plugs I had to take off the intake manifold for the back three, I needed a 5mm hex, and wish I had these

fits on a torque wrench for torquing bike components correctly. yeah you can use a socket bit holder too but these seem cheaper.

Primarily? Bicycles (metric).. along with a torque wrench. Some appliance repair, those are usually standard/imperial.

Small engines/lawn equipment, Ikea furniture, industrial pumps, my car... now that you've asked you'll probably jinx yourself and find ten times they are needed in the next year. I'm not even exaggerating when I saw I have a bag of these bits, plus another full set in a case, and several sets of standard Allen wrenches that aren't attached to a socket. I need them all the time.

I don't understand the need, you can use a drill/driver and a bit just fine. Impact wrench seems overkill. Or do you use a ratchet?

Impact wrench is overkill, I'd only use that if I was trying to get a rusted bolt off of the bottom of a car. These bits aren't rated for that use anyway, I don't think (Impact bits are usually a black oxide coating, not chrome).

So, mostly a ratchet, yes. Usually combined with a torque wrench to ensure they are tight enough to stay tight but not so tight as to where you may damage something. Even if you didn't use it for anything else, grabbing a 5mm bit to use with ratchet next time you put furniture together and you'll be thankful to have it as the entire process would go much faster. Realistically, the 4mm, 5mm, and 10mm will see 95% of the use of this set. But considering individual sockets usually run around $5, this is a good price to have a couple of extra bits should the need ever arise.

Using hex bits now to repair an air compressor. Use hex and torx on motorcycles. And buying a cheap set with soft metal bits can make repairs frustrating and more work..

I could see the 10mm being useful for adjusting the valves on a small engine.

The 10mm is used on the drain plug of a Toyota automatic transmission.
