Can anyone confirm that HP doesn't remotely stop the printer from printing if you don't order supplies directly from HP?
HP absolutely does block any third party cartridges and they are very aggressive about it. It's even detailed in the product description on the Amazon listing:

This printer is intended to work only with cartridges with original HP chips or circuitry and will block cartridges using non-HP chips or circuitry. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of these measures

In the description, it mentions they will block third party cartridges from being used. They are pretty aggressive about it. Best thing is don't ever update the firmware unless you are experiencing software related issues.
But if you intend on using third party cartridges, consider a printer from another brand like Brother that is more forgiving on third party cartridges.
Here's what HP support team answered on the product page:
Thank you for your interest in this HP LaserJet printer! It does not require a subscription to use. Also, your LaserJet M110w will still be able to print without a subscription: All you need to do is change the toner from the Instant Ink-proved toner with a store-bought HP toner since the printer is no longer on the program. The LaserJet M140w is eligible for Instant Ink, but participation is optional.
