If they haven't read it yet, I'd recommend The Hunger Games prequel over this. There's another prequel coming next year as well.
I couldn't even finish the movie version of the last installment in the theater. We walked out of that movie and snuck into a recently-started showing of Krampus. (True story, and Krampus was great: top 3 Christmas movie!)
