I'm upgrading from a Samsung 60" plasma 3D panel. I feel like I need to jump on to a Samsung OLED because the plasma and brand were so good to me all these years, especially with the pro calibration. I feel like upgrading to the TCL brand would be a step down but the price of the 85" is so darn tempting.

Pull the trigger on the 85" for $1500 now or save a bit more for a good deal on a 77" OLED?

Thoughts?

all things being equal I'd go with the Roku OS if possible. The TCLtv+ is a new streaming platform, just like SamgungTV+, both good.. I was a bit out of line, I didn't know TCL stopped using Roku OS so this new ROKU app wouldn't work.

That is news to me but I've been out of the TV scene for awhile. I'm still rocking the 4yo TCL 6 series and then scored a half price Sony Bravia OLED a year ago.
FWIW the Google TV integration on my QM7 has been great. We have a 4K Chromecast w/ GTV in the bedroom, and the Google TV OS on this TV is smoother than the standalone unit.

I was going to say the one drawback with Samsung TV+ app is that it only works to the TCL Roku, won't work on my Roku boxes. I prefer using external inputs, especially on my Sony OLED... the Android TV OS is alright but I prefer my Fire Cube and Roku Ultra boxes. Personal preference over my Apple TV and old Shield.

specs say it has ATSC and NTSC

That would be ATSC 1.0, not 3.0. 3.0 is necessary to receive OTA 4K broadcasts.

I wish everybody would add something like Roku's "Private Listening" feature, but I assume they have a patent. I know I could pair directly to the TV, but the reconnect instructions look like a pain. Plus it appears only one device can be connected at a time, but my wife and I regularly use headphones while watching together at night.

I guess I could switch to an external Roku box, but then I deal with multiple remotes and input switching... Boooo, booo I say.

Ok I have 3 OLEDS now and this tv in 85 and the local dimming is incredible on it. It's not OLED because the viewing angles begin to introduce light that isn't seen from direct on. If you're in a bright room then this is a better bet (unless opposite a bunch of windows). If it's a dark room then OLED will ALWAYS look better, but then you're paying that premium. I am incredibly happy with this and I also just returned the U8N and no regrets.

I wonder how this model compares to the TCL R646 deal, that was $400 earlier this month? Is it worth the $100 difference (before tax) for this in the 55 inch size since it is so much newer? Really was hoping for the RTINGS review but like someone else said, the deal will probably be over by then.

People were saying they were getting boxes that were open so idk how good that was. Either way this one is much newer.

I agree for sure on the newer part. Only concern I have is that I learned from Jurassic Park that if it's heavy then it is expensive, and the 55r646 is 14 pounds heavier without the stand. No idea if that applies to TVs anymore though lol.

Thanks for your input. I failed to mention my viewing is 90% in a dark room for movies. 10% sports in the day for the occasional NFL or NBA game.

I guess I'll wait for an OLED.

Just picked up mine a few days ago. I'm underwhelmed with the screen. it looks washed out. I don't know if it's just mine. Are there any settings to make it better. I use this for Gaming, Movies and PC Monitor for the room.

Installed mine last night. Replaced a Sony 850e that was 7 years old. Increased image brightness was my primary reason for buying as I have a very bright living room. The TCL does not dissapoint! The Dolby Vision picture setting is truly awesome. Scenes where the sun flashes by seemed blinding! For $700 really a fantastic value.
One note... my TV only came with 2 screws in the back, not 4!! So if you are replacing an existing TV, don't be surprised if you have to make a trip to the hardware store. I would reuse the screws that came out of my Sony TV but they were too short.. the 65" requires M4x16 screws.

I will never, ever buy another LG product for as long as I live. Worst consumer electronics company I've had the displeasure of dealing with. They shouldn't be allowed to sell products in the United States. Every single LG item I've owned has failed prematurely. Fridges, microwaves, TV's, cell phones. And now they are entering the air conditioning market with their faulty compressors.
Same. Except for my LG TVs. Those have been solid. Whereas, both of my Samsung TVs died (one was $3300 new!). Appliances are a different story. All my LG appliances have been crap, whereas my Samsung appliances are rock solid. Go figure.
