True but I would say CB still has it's place. I might be old school but while AM CB is susceptible to interference, it'll still reach through at an acceptable level further than GMRS equivalent.

GMRS with typical walkie talkie only have a clear LOS of 5 miles-10 miles max. And that's really optimistic, typically it's 2-5 miles LOS with handheld. Even less so with foliage and mountains in the way. I believe CB should be able to go much further.

Inherent to the frequency range, you can go much further with CB although you do bring up a good point that at 4 watts, it's somewhat the same

Not true at all; for example offroaders or overlanders will use CB over regular walkie talkies for range and at 40, this is a good deal

how much of a difference do you really get with a regular CB vs walkie talkie? aren't they both 4 watts?

With something like this, you could use custom antenna configurations which presumably should be able to go further than your typical handheld.

Plus a GMRS Mobile Unit runs typically 25/40 or 50 watts. Cant compare a mobile to a Walkie.

Is this a good unit to buy for a first CB radio? I've always wanted one in my truck but I thought a solid unit would cost much more than this

bought a nice cobra with a long rooftop antenna in the late 90s and only used it a few times. Do truckers still use or want these, that I might be able to sell them it?. or useful in emergency/bugout/better than nothing?

What Chat thinks…

Yes, if you buy a CB (Citizens Band) radio for your truck, you will be able to listen to communications, and truckers do still use them. Here's a detailed look at your questions:

Listening to CB Radio
Truckers and CB Radios: While the use of CB radios has declined with the advent of cell phones and GPS, many truckers still use CB radios, especially for short-range communication, traffic updates, road conditions, and socializing. Channels 17 and 19 are popular among truckers for these purposes.
Other Users: Apart from truckers, CB radios are used by off-roaders, RVers, and hobbyists, so there's usually some activity to listen to, depending on your location.

What Chet thinks…
You two donkey-dicks couldn't get laid in a morgue.
