For less than $100, upgrading to r50 is pretty substantial improvement. Get them directly from Canon

No. You need some zoom/telephone lens. 50mm is basically equivalent to yours eyes normal field of view. So a 18-45mm is more for wide shots. You need a 75-300mm or the like.

I'm new to DSLRs but it's a weird naming convention that the "R50" is better than the "R100".
I found Canon nomenclature confusing. But it seems that the lower the number the higher spec the product. Also, the few digits the higher the spec. They also interleave FF with Crop sensor into the numbering and it's anything but intuitive, IMHO.

The improvements of the R50 over the R100 are very substantial technically and physically with the articulating screen. You can get way more creative near ground or overhead shots when you aren't forced to look through the viewfinder.

Just to further confuse you, "mirrorless" cameras are not DSLRs. DSLRs have a mirror which bounces the light coming through the lens into the viewfinder, so you are seeing exactly what the image sensor will "see". When the shutter button is pressed the light is redirected to the sensor.

In a mirrorless cameras you are instead either looking at a digital viewfinder, or through a slightly offset optical viewfinder. Since they have fewer parts, they can be smaller than a DSLR that has an equivalent quality sensor.

Both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are both capable of taking great pictures, though.

If your lens is a Canon EF mount, yes.

This is true for a full frame, but this is an APS-C sensor so you need to account for the 1.6 zoom factor. The 45mm max zoom is equivalent to 72mm in a full frame.

There are a few things missing that you will soon find you need.
1. Articulating screen for low level pics, etc.
2. Lens is terribly slow (F stop)for 2024.
3. Can't shoot videos longer than 7 min.
I got rid of my Canon EOS Rebel T3 for 1 and 3.
Spend a couple of hundred more and get the Lumix G85 or something like that with much better features.

The R100's max record time is 29 minutes 59 seconds. It is lightyears beyond the Rebel T3 in nearly every way. The kit lens is a pretty decent match for these cameras. I use the same lens daily with my R50 in various light conditions and it works like a champ with minimal noise. While I agree that the articulating screen is a big feature, I don't think it's a deal breaker for a beginner or casual shooter.

Would this be a great camera for doing video podcasting? So plugged into computer, power adapter of some sort I suppose would be needed for creating longer videos.

If your primary use is video, I would recommend a better camera like the R50, especially if you want to record in 4k. For live streaming, you'll want a dummy battery, something like this [amazon.com].
