I've been buying my kids these on sale for years, but finally fed up with Amazon's junk. I've found no way in the past couple of models to root it. There is a Fire Toolbox program to debloat, disable ads, install google play, swap launchers, etc--this helps make it tolerable, but there's always the amazon software in the background and often have issues with google services crashing, launchers getting swapped back, etc.

It is a great value if you actually want the amazon software, prime video, kindle books, etc. But if you want the freedom to use your own launchers and get rid of the junk, look to ONN's at WalMart. Or, I'm waiting on an Alldocube from China at the moment. Will see how it compares.

Dang, I didn't know that even existed! Not surprising, though, everything else is "ad-supported!" Looked on Amazon and apparently, you can get rid of the ads for $15. Where do the ads show?
just on the lock screen as far as i'm aware. i don't find it intrusive really.

Can confirm. Even though I turned off all the settings I could, the tablet just got worse and slower over time. Now we simply share the iPad.

Picked the Galaxy Tab A9+ over this. Bye bye Fire!

But FWIW this tablet is now $75 not 85

Galaxy Tab A9+ 11" via Shop Samsung app is $155. Double the storage (128GB) and double the RAM (8GB). Well worth the extra $13.

I heard it's possible to pay $15-$20 to get the ads removed. I've also heard that sometime customer service will remove them upon request. Can anyone confirm this?
Yes, in the past you could select a version without ads for a fee of $15-20. It looks like this is still the case for the top of the line Fire Tabler (11).

However, you can remove ads on any device for $15 it looks like: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cu...URJ5A6YMBU

Wrong, the 32GB version is $75. The 64GB is $85.

I've never had an issue with requesting (free) ad removal via chat, citing personal issues with the ads, children etc. but I haven't tried since the 2021 version.

I can't remember the last one of these that was "rootable". To add to this, the capabilities of Fire Toolbox were nerf'd by the 7.3.2.2 update a few years ago. This killed toolbox's ability to remove ads, block OTA updates, and install custom launchers. You can still use it to install play store AFAIK, and they may have found workarounds for the other stuff since (but I'd be surprised).

Hindsight but if they would've just left the ad remover out of toolbox from the get-go, it probably would've stayed under Amazon's radar.

This is the best deal, but it is more money for those on a budget. I did notice that if you try to use one of the special discounts on the app, like Military, Student or First Responders, it changes the price and makes it go up. So it is not letting you stack discounts.
