I posted 10 wyze cams (various gens up to OG and latest doorbell) for $90 on craigslist. Not a single person has expressed interest. I'm dropping the price $10 as each week goes by and this box of wyze cams goes unsold. Was a faithful supporter since 2019. Just moved over to TP-Link Tapo. The Tapo app loads in just 1 second and ready to go instantly. The Wyze app loads in 3 seconds, and takes another 2 seconds to be usable (respond to taps). Now have 6 Tapo cams. I still have wyze home sensor v2 hub and door locks.

I've had Wyze cameras for over 5 years and never had one brick on me. I always update to latest firmware whenever prompted.

well i posted it in orangecounty craigslist if you want to search for my posting. I'm pretty sure selling things personally on SD is not allowed, so apologies to mods for thread jacking.

I'm always surprised at the amount of negative posts on Wyze deals. I have many of their products and they work very well at a very low price point. I happily pay $10/month for added functionality, and I pay $60/yr for the home security system (which I only really use on rare occasions in which the whole family and the dog aren't home). I had one Cam V2 "brick" due to a failed update once, and Wyze customer service sent me a replacement for free. After that I was able to bring the cam back to life and I've been using it since. The app is a bit slow, notifications are a bit delayed at times, and cameras sometimes take too long to start up. Still, there is no other system of cameras that is this inexpensive (with frequent discounts) and offers this level of functionality, quality, and innovation.

people hate wyze because they bait-and-switched, early on everything was free then they gradually added monthly fees

Don't thumbs down this guy, he is telling the truth. I made this mistake once and my doorbell stopped working for almost a year until they came out with a new firmware. It was working just fine before the upgrade, but naturally I assumed a firmware upgrade was a good thing. Just don't do it unless your cams are experiencing problems already.

That's usually a good rule of thumb for firmware updates but this experience is not one I share with the cams at least. I own a half dozen of these and have never had one brick on me. Between myself and family members we have dozens of these and nobody has had an issue. Again, with the cams only.

yeah, you should update the software on these. There security has more holes than Swiss cheese.
I have 5 cams and have never had on brick.

Same here, only problem I've had is some won't update the firmware. Oh well. I'm looking at switching to tapo next or eufy.

Wyze was forced into the bait-and-switch business model when Apple acquired Xnor.ai and pulled their AI software libraries from the market.

Wyze had worked with Xnor to build and train an AI model (aka LLM) that ran well on the low end hardware in their cameras. Apple bought the shiny toy that Wyze had helped build and Wyze then chose to run their recognition models in the cloud where Wyze bears the AWS cost (instead of running it on the camera nodes).

Wyze, however, has utterly failed to produce the source code they owe to owners though (GPL & other licenses). Hopefully a copyright holder will sue Wyze into compliance.

I have had about a dozen various models inside and outside of my home for more than 5 years and I update them all regularly never once has any of them been bricked. Maybe it's your network that is causing the problem?

I wish they had discounted the v4 cameras too. Several weeks back I saw HD had them for 25 and I didn't get any at that time. When I made it back they were back to normal price.

Is this model subscription free? Lost track of all these subscription models. I just want to see video playback with a SD card just like the good old days lol

Are you able to use this without the video being sent to external servers?
You can do this with anything - and a lot more - if you install pihole [pi-hole.net] at your home.

pihole is - by a wide margin - the best quality of life improvement for the lowest cost I've made in my network and I would encourage basically everyone to research it and get it.
  • It's a DNS for your network that acts as a black hole for suspect or bad requests
  • You use it by configuring a small Raspberry pi on your network and configuring your router to use it as your DNS rather than sending all requests out to the internet.
  • Its advertised purpose (which it does amazingly well) is to block ads. With it installed, everything on your network (all computers, all phones, even some other devices) which request ad data will have those requests dropped, and ads generally won't appear.
  • This can break some sites (they have ad blocking software detection configured to interfere with your browsing), but on the whole, it makes absolutely everything much, much, much better.
  • It can also be used to add entire domains to a blocklist -- I configured it to block traffic to certain countries [pi-hole.net] that I know I really never want to see and don't want traffic being sent to without my awareness.

This doesn't mean you should not care if Wyze try to offload data without you knowing, but I wanted to mention it. On my network, I run pihole on a Raspberri Pi Zero that I have plugged directly into my router and powered via USB.
