I have this it is excellent!! I use the Apple Key feature on my Watch daily to open the door. I do recommend getting the Smart Hub so you get notifications to your phone and can remotely unlock and such.

I've had the U100 (almost same as U50, but has fingerprint reader). since last Nov.

Overall, I'm happy with them. Original batteries still working and report 65-75%

Even though they support unlocking via passcode, Apple Home Key, physical, key, and NFC, I find we use the fingerprint reader most of the time because it's more convenient. That's the one feature the U50 doesn't have. The U100 is currently $132, and IMHO, the extra cost is worth it.

Mine are connected my AppleTV for Home Key support, and then I also have them paired with an Aqara M2 hub (via Zigbee) so that I can also access them in Home Assistant via the matter integration.

The only complaint I have for these locks is that the initial Zigbee connection from the lock to the M2 hub after the M2 reboots requires a brief connection to Aqara's cloud servers to get an encryption key. Once the local Zigbee connection is made, you can block internet access to the M2 until the next time you have to reboot or power cycle the M2 hub. If you're not using the M2 hub, this won't affect you. Other than this, I have mine working 100% locally (no internet).

So I have the u50 and the u100 and I couldn't disagree more. The NFC on the u50 is almost instantaneous when opening via smart watch or smart phone. The finger print is clunky and never reads our fingers correctly on the first shot. I guess it's a YMMV thing. Overall, we absolutely LOVE both and if you have an APPLE TV it can be used as a hub/home kit activation for these locks

We have the one with fingerprint and NEVER use the fingerprint. I use my watch all the time and it's always instant. I'm going to get one of these for my back door as well

Yeah, maybe fingerprint accuracy is YMMV. It works well for my family. Every once in a while, I have to retry once, but most of the time it gets it on the first try and is instantaneous.

If I had an Apple Watch, that would be just as convenient. Since we don't have watches, a finger is almost always quicker than the other methods unless you're already holding your phone.

I am trying to decide between the U50 and U100. Is the only big difference the fingerprint reader? I am in the Apple ecosystem so a smart lock that works with Homekit is a must for me. Does either lock require the purchase of the Aqara hub to receive notifications or work properly? If they don't need the Aqara hub I'm leaning toward the U100 for the fingerprint reader.

I have the U100, and agree, I use the fingerprint reader most of the time. I find that the Apple Watch takes a few seconds, and the iPhone is a bit faster than the Apple Watch. I have it set up with the M2, and the HomePod.

However, lately, it's been reading a bit slow across the board, and I'm not sure how I can replicate what you've done with blocking the internet access to M2 so it's only locally. What are the pros/cons?

If you have an AppleTV or HomePod within Bluetooth range and you all you want to use it with is HomeKit, you don't need the M2 hub. Control status, and notifications all work just fine. You can also manage your passcodes through the Apple Home app.

More details:

The reason I got an M2 hub is because HomeKit only allows you to pair the lock with one controller. So without the M2, I could either connect it to the Apple ecosystem or with Home Assistant. Since I wanted both, I opted to use Bluetooth to pair the locks to my Apple TV, and then use Matter (supported on the M2 hub) to make the locks available to Home Assistant.

I have fingerprint version and love it.. my wife hates it.. I notice she also bends a thumb back in an odd position and convinced this is why she sees issues, also it makes noise prior to sliding lock open, so I think she tries to open door sooner than should as the lock is not totally unlocked yet

My work around is Watch / Phone / and a STFU card NFC card (which works pretty good)

If you want to block Internet from a device, you just need to set up a firewall rule on your router to drop WAN traffic to/from that device. That process will be specific to the type of router that you use in your home.

The main reasons I did it are 1) to avoid providing ongoing status of my house to a company that doesn't need it and 2) to prove that my devices will still continue to function if the company's cloud servers disappear (e.g. Insteon) or they start charging money to be able to use them in the future (e.g. Chamberlain MyQ)

The main downsides are extra complexity to set up the firewall rule, no automatic firmware updates of devices, and you can't use the Aqara app to interact with the locks.

I have the U100, amazing product. If others are saying that this model is ONLY missing the fingerprint then this is great value. It has so many other ways to open that you don't need the Fingerprint reader. To be honest, I think the U100 is overkill with the amount of ways you can unlock.

Repped. Thank you for answering my questions. It was exactly the info I was looking for!
