I personally own two of these, and at $10 a radio, I am in for another pair. They use the Kenwood style plug and is programmable via CHIRP. The sound, IMO, is better then the UV5r for comparison. Also have 200 programmable channel slots, more then Baofeng. Yes, they work on 2m/70 and GMRS. The ONLY thing that bugs me about these, is the stud is on the antenna vs the stud for the antenna being on the body of the radio. Not a deal breaker, just personal preference.

Ok.. trying to justify this purchase. My 5yo kid has a set of VTech but these would be way better, right? Is the operation of these complicated?

Very complicated. You are better off to get those simple Motorola ones.

You can use CHIRP or the Retevis programming software to program whatever frequency on the 2m/70cm and GMRS spectrum. As long as your settings are correct, they will talk to eachother.
