Wouldn't having electric capability take out the joy and challenge and versatility of a REAL mountain bike as a sport?
I thought that initially as well, but it doesn't really make it "easier" per se. You still get a workout, and still have to climb. I just end up being able to go 3 to 4 times further on my rides than I used to, and I never have to get off and walk up really steep technical sections. It really is kind of a game changer.

No.
For example for me, the nearest trail is a bit over an hour away. I can normally ride around 40 miles on a non-electric bike.
I have an e-caliber and I can go longer/further on the e-bike, which makes the 2+ hour round-trip drive to the trail more worth the time.
I will normally ride with the motor off for most of the time, then use the pedal assist towards the end to ride more than I would normally be able to.

Do you have any recommendations for a better bike below $2000?
For what type of riding?
If you have a Trek Clearance Center near you, you may be able to get an e-bike at an excellent price. I have one near me and they have a bunch at 70% + off MSRP.

There aren't going to be any eMTBs worth buying below $2k. There aren't that many mountain bikes without electric motor pedal assist worth buying below $2k.

Now for street riding where you aren't subjecting the bike to dirt, mud, rocks, jumps, etc, you can find many ebikes below $2k. But actual mountain biking, no.

The sale price makes an all around better deal over many of the comparably priced China garbage e-bikes from brands like Aventon, Mokwheel, Magicycle, Magna, Lectric, and the rest of the Chinese garbage being sold out there. At least this one is mid drive.

Easy-medium trail riding at most, and road/gravel the other times. But an ebike is a must since I don't have the strength or stamina to enjoy a trail for now.

Reading the description, Specialized isn't marketing this as a mountain bike. The thread title is misleading, as Specialized calls it an Active bike and notes that it has mounts for racks, kick stand, etc.
I also can't see whether this is a Class 2 or Class 3 ebike? Anyone find top speed listed anywhere?
Looks to be Class 2 - assist tops out at 20 MPH. Per other sites. But interestingly Specialized doesn't discuss it in their online description. Says 50nm with 250 watts max output. But nothing specific about what class it really is.

It takes the joy and challenge out of the uphill slog so you can get to the fun (ie downhill) parts sooner. And less tired when you arrive at the top.

Upway.co, put in your height and the type of bike you want on the filter and sort by % off.

There is a large difference between an ebike from a major bike manufacturer and an e-bike bike manufacturer.
I've ridden bikes from Aventon, RadPower and Juiced and those are very heavy bikes. You would need to almost exclusively have the motor on at all times.
On the other hand, e-bikes form Specialized, Giant, Trek, etc generally have smaller motors and batteries, but are way lighter and ride like a non-e-bike.

It's going to be tough to find something new, from the second category above, that is under $2000. I think your best bet is to look at Canyon's sale or outlet sections for either an trail or XC mountain bike, or even one of their electric gravel bikes since it seems like your desired riding leans more towards flat terrain.
I am personally partial to Trek due to their customer service and being that I live near a clearance center. I have an e-caliber and I love it, but I would never have bought it at it's retail price. I have a friend who has a Specialized Turbo Levo and he really likes it. He also bought it at a deep discount.
I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

The goal was to use this bike to get started then upgrade the parts later down the road (pun unintended). But what is it about this bike that makes it not worth getting for mountain biking? From my understanding full suspension is not a requirement and everything else on this bike is upgradable. So are there any upgrades that could turn this bike into an actual mountain bike? if so do you mind mentioning the part name/model?

As far as I know neither Specialized or Trek have any class 3 ebikes. Major bike manufacturers only make paddle assisted bikes. Particularly for mountain bikes throttle will make riding trail more dangerous.

For the riding that you have described, this bike will be an excellent choice.

You are confusing bike class. Class 2 has throttle and is limited to 20mph.

All major brands have a ton of class 3 bikes (no throttle). Class 3 is pedal assist up to 28mph.
