In a corporate environment this thing fails miserably. I live in Teams on the daily and this would not cut it for large meetings and collaboration.

If you plan to only use it like Skype for group chats, meetings with friends/family...maybe?

Long Press Desktop (like your going to Widgets), Home Setting > ...More > Turn on Rotation

Even though I had: Settings > Display >Advanced > Rotation setting all turned on, it would force landscape "upside down" with the above it will now work right side up

Did the techy community ever come up with a easy and reliable way to unlock this thing? I tried previously but couldn't get it done.

This LINK [github.com] is for LineageOS 15.1, Android 8.1. It's pretty straight forward and easy to do although it is an older android version. Works for my purposes at the moment. Will tackle a newer version on the second ThinkSmart View at some point

BTW, this deal has been going on since May at Woot

I got this to tinker. It was kind of a bust trying to use it as HA screen/portal. Cheap phone/tablet would work better.

It was laggy for me. I followed some instructions to get it out of Microsoft apps and then got browser working. Maybe it's the wifi but I have $30 tablets that work better and I don't have break into it.
I was in for the idea of it. It just didn't meet my expectations. I got it off ebay for $28 also.

Looks like it might be better with LineageOS but guy also comments, with only 2gb of RAM, thing can get slow.

Anyone have any experience with it for it's intended use? Is it decent to join Teams meetings with video? Would appreciate a smaller, second screen to my laptop on my already crowded desk, though I can't imagine the perspective being very good considering the camera angle.

I have a few Prepaid Android phones around the home now. This thing is better because of the larger screen. LineageOS works well on mine purchased in May, you just have to downgrade the TeamsOS to a compatible version that supports booting.

My only gripe is that some Apps want to force landscape mode but upside down. The stand only works in one direction (it can work upside down but it's not ideal) and it's always bothersome to pick it up to rotate.

At this price, I bought 4 last time and it was easy because the whole process was just a rinse/repeat operation with installation sequences. I have many unfinished tinkering projects myself but this device has the best reward/dollar ratio.
