Can anyone who has this confirm the max amount of devices they've had connected? I've my previous router could do 30 devices fine, but as soon as you went up to 32 or more, devices would randomly get kicked. Using Asus Blue Cave now and even as old as it is (4+) I haven't had any problems with 50+ devices, but wifi can just be slow at the far end of the house. Thanks.

It's 2x2 on one of the 5GHz radios. Again, same as R6700AX.
The second 5GHz radio is 4x4. The extra streams could enable faster speeds if you have a >2x2 client or some better range for 2x2 clients.
Unless you are seeing issues with your 5GHz client devices or want OpenWRT, the upgrade is probably not noticeable.
is it worth the hassle to change?
Price looks good, but I'm fairly satisfied with the netgear and have my smart hub / smart home setup and mac filtering all established.
Years ago, I was deep into router comparisons and (thought I) deeply understood specs, benefits, drawbacks, but alas, I haven't stayed in the loop and have a knowledge gap
MX4300 is an IPQ8174 with 4 cores at 1.4 GHz.
R7800 has 128 MB of flash. MX4300 has 512 MB of flash.
Both have 512 MB of RAM.
Cores, RAM, and Flash probably only matter if you want to use OpenWRT or similar. R7800 is supported in OpenWRT [openwrt.org]. MX4300 is likely to also work in OpenWRT as discussed elsewhere in this thread.
On the WiFI side, MX4300 will be an upgrade in some ways and a downgrade in others.
R7800 has two radios. 2.4GHz is 4x4 802.11n. 5 GHz is 4x4 802.11ac.
MX4200 has three radios. 2.4GHz has fewer streams at 2x2 but adds 802.11ax. One 5GHz radio also has only 2x2 streams and adds 802.11ax. The other is 4x4 and adds 802.11ax.
R7800 also has support of 160MHz operation, 160MHz 802.11ac clients are rare though.
Other bonus on the R7800 are a second usb3 port and an esata port.

That all being said, I would say various other manufacturers of networking equipment are in the same boat. Regular, consumer-oriented products have gone off the deep end in terms of quality, consistency, and customization.
I have heard that Ubiquiti offers high-quality devices since they target professional services/commercial. But they seem to be pricey

If you want to use it under the opensource firmware, then you'll face the situation that the firmware cannot take the use of the hardware. Like for the ipq8174 -- the main chip of this router, it contains one NPU for network processing acceleration and one PPE for packet processing acceleration. All these are the key features of the hardware design and they will massively improve the system performance and stablity. However, mainline openwrt won't support any of those and it will be hard and risky to use other experimental branches (with QSDK based) which won't get well maintained and you'll need to compile the firmware by yourself.
For now, I think the only brand that still has better reputation in the custom level products is ASUS (but only for popular product series). Although the price is higher, but that's almost the only place that you can have both performance and long term official support as a regular customer.
