This HD hack is one of those where you buy a tool + 2 batteries + bag "main item" (for $299) and then choose a tool-only "free item" (worth varying prices) , and then return whichever one you don't want to keep.

If you want to keep the "main item", it is in your interest to get the most expensive "free item" and then return the "free item"

For example, if you add the Dewalt 20V XR Cordless 3 in. Cut-Off Tool with 6.0Ah and 4.0Ah Batteries + Bag "main item" (https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWAL.../322364077) and the Cut off tool-only as the "free item" (https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWAL.../317267403) then it comes out to $187 if you keep the main item or $112 if you keep the free item.

Note that this main item combo (DCS438BWCB246CK) includes DCS438B (20V XR Cordless 3 in. Cut-Off Tool Only, normally $179) and DCB246CK (20V MAX XR Premium Lithium-Ion 6.0Ah and 4.0Ah + charger + bag, normally $199) for a normal total of $378.

Other "main item" possibilities are:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWAL.../314645883

Hi OP, just trying to understand how this works. So if I selected the main item combination with the cutoff tool and selected a secondary cut off tool as the free item, I would walk away with 2 cutoff tools, batteries, and bag?

Of which would be hackable

The battery kit is the main item. The + tool is whatever you select. The discount is distributed across both items, which you see in your cart. You must buy the batteries + tool in order to get the discount. The "hack" Is returning the batteries, and keeping the tool at the discounted price.

Yes, you'd end up with 2 cut off tools + battery kit. Then if you returned 1 of the cut off tools and the battery kit you'd walk away with the tool-only cut off tool for $112, which is a great deal since it is normally $179, and from my research the best cordless cut off tool.

The other hack would be to return just one of the cut off tools and keep the battery kit + the other cut off tool for $187. which is what I did. My reasoning was that if $112 was a good price for the tool by itself, now you're getting 2 good size batteries, a charger and a bag for an extra $75.

If you didn't care about getting the cut off tool, you could add another tool like the circular saw, return the main item, and keep the saw for something like $75.

I had everything delivered, and returned 1 cut off to the store with no questions asked.

Thanks OP! Repped. I chose the free cut off tool because I already have too many batteries, but am still deciding which to keep. I'll probably keep the tool+batteries since it's a better discount.

General info on HD Hackable deals (my current understanding of it anyway) -

I'm relatively new to Home Depot "Hackable" deals, but in general they are in the form of "if you buy this item you can choose another item for free".

To see the cost breakdown in a Hackable deal, you would select the additional item, add it to the Cart, and then view your cart.

You can experiment by emptying your cart repeating with other combinations.

I apologize in advance for the rest of this post :-)

Hack Math:

In general, in a hackable deal where item A + B are offered for a single (sale) price, you'd get the best deal on item A if you choose the highest priced item B, since the final cost breakdown is item A's ratio (compared to the normal price of A+B) of the sale price.

In this deal where I am interested in getting the best deal on one of the Main items (A = $299), I chose the highest priced Free item (B=Cut off tool = $179) since the price breakdown of the Main item is

$A/($A+$B) * $Sale price = ($ Main item)/($ Main + $ Free item) * ($ Sale price) = $299/($299 + $179) * $299 = ($299/$478) * $299 = $187.03 , ie, I'm paying about 62% of the Main item's (sale) price of $299 when I return the Free item.

If I chose one of the other cheaper Free items (they are all $99) , I'd end up paying about 75.1% of the $299 Main items or $224.63

If I want to end up with one of the tool-only Free items and return the Main item, it doesn't matter which Main item I choose since they are all $299.

Fantastic! Thanks for this breakdown.

Not the best HD dewalt hack deal, but if you need any of these things they are a great deal.

Batteries usually get 10-12$/AH on FB marketplace.

Bare tools usually get 50-75$

They just priced their battery insanely then encourage you to add a tool to ease the pain. It's more of a way to hook you up. They know what you're doing (aka "hack). OK deal if you need them all.

Lowes had the craftsman v20 cutoff tool which is pretty much identical to DeWalt (both made by Stanley Black and Decker) with a 4.0 and 6.0 and rapid charger for $149. I picked up that deal a month ago and the cutoff is a beast. There are YT comparison vids showing jt outperforms the Ryobi Ridgid and M12 Milwaukee.

So you spend $299+tax, then if you return the free tool cut off tool, they'll give you how much back? $179+tax? Do you use the receipt for the return?

To be fair I could teach a random kitten to bake a file into cake, teach another kitten to drive a car to deliver the cake to a jail where a third kitten I that I taught to file through steel bars prior to its incarceration could file through the bars and escape (after consuming the cake of course), and while the Milwaukee might be faster at cutting a steel bar or two than me teaching all those skills, there's no way the Milwaukee could beat the kittens start-to-finish successful jailbreak elapsed time. If you the steel bar the Milwaukee must cut with an ordinary stick of refrigerated butter, it might edge past them. Maybe.

Yes, I used a printout of my online order receipt. The amount of the refund would be the adjusted amount of the tool-only cut off tool as it showed in your cart when purchased as part of the package deal (NOT the normal retail price of the tool). So it was $111.97 + tax = $118.69 for me.

Beware of these 6mA batteries. After 2-3 uses within a year, 2 battery cells died resulting the battery only getting charged to 1 out of 3 light bar.
Dewalt warranty was easy to deal with and sent me a brand new battery, but I've also heard other people getting dead batteries within couple of years. My 2mA batteries that I bought in 2017 is still going strong.

Just got back from Home Depot to return just the tool and received my $118 refund without issue. So can confirm this does work. Thanks OP!
