I played these for the first time like a year ago or so, not a bad FPS series at all. Story took some... awkward turns (rape alert) but was a good game, and at this price easy to say yes to.

I thought 3 was great, probably better than 2 which just seemed an 8 hour expansion pack (2 was not bad but I was happy when it ended). 3 wasn't trying to be a glorified DLC but a completely stand alone game. Which made sense in terms of the large timeline between releases. I cannot imagine 6-7 years later expecting the Dev to release F.E.A.R v1.3 as opposed to a 3.0. Seems like a lot of people wanted that though. 3 did feel a bit more C.O.D.-ish though. Also had much (much) darker tones vs 1 or 2, not as much horror or jump scares. I always thought the horror / jump scares from the first 2 games were lame even back in the 2000's so I did not miss that. Played though 1-3 (and DLC's) again this year, still feel the same way about all of them.

One really cool thing about 3 is how you could replay the entire game as the brother who can possess enemies, uses powers outside of possession, etc. You could easily reply the entire game again as if it was a new game as this alters gameplay so radically.

Oh, and 3's story and acting was decent unless the first 2 games.

I thought 3 was great, 2 was a rinse and repeat of 1. Worth your time if you enjoyed 1 but all the good and bad was just copied and pasted over.

All of these still hold up well in 2024.

FEAR 1 & 2 don't have native controller support, and FEAR 1 may not run on a Steam Deck at all due to unpatched programming (it's borderline abandonware due to licensing issues).

FEAR 3 uses typical Xbox 360 controls.

The best possible way to play FEAR 1 is on a dual-core Windows XP x86 / 32bit PC with PhysX and EAX capable hardware. Since Steam doesn't work on XP anymore, the GOG edition is the best way to play.

Apparently the GOG version of FEAR 1 still has Securom code in it. I'd personally recommend avoiding that.

There was a community profile I liked which mapped a large portion of the lessor used buttons to a quick access menu to the left track pad greatly simplifying things. For example, I think the menu got rid of 4 different grenade type bindings. also handled quick save, quick load, etc. Ended up exporting the config as a template so I could import it into FEAR 2 as well. Bindings were 95% the same between 1 and 2.
