People get so scared of 60 hz most of you wouldnt even know if it didnt say-LOL
You can always turn off motion smoothing on almost all TVs, that's the first thing I do when I get the tv. I almost always use film maker mode if available for watching most of the content.

I know it's a budget model but seems like I would be fine considering I currently have a 7 year old 60" samsung 1080p. Thoughts?
This will likely be a lot better, size and picture quality.

If you hang onto your TVs for a long time I would get something with better PQ. TCL makes some nice mid range mini-LED TVs, but you'll pay around double for it.

Seems like a decent deal. Any comment on the quality?
S Class is their lower quality series (S4/S5)

Q Class is their higher quality series (Q6/QM7/QM8)

As you can see, the numbers 4-8 are used in general to denote quality. This is an S4

Okay, I don't even own a 4k displays of any kind in my house. Biggest TV is 42" and it's nearly 10 years old.
Which is surprising as I have an IT degree and used to really love my gadgets. But, my IT degree is 25 years old (I had never even been on the Internet until my second semester of college...only 2 out of 40 in our class had). So obviously all of my knowledge is ancient.

My question is...which is it that makes movies and especially tv shows look like you are in the studio while they are filming it...think it's commonly known as the "soap opera" effect. Is it 120hz refresh rate or is it where they add "artificial frames" to make it appear smoother. I think that's called motion interpolation maybe? A few of my relatives have whichever does that on their tvs...and I can't even hardly watch it. It's so distracting that it takes me right out of the movie. I just can't watch it. I just don't want to make a mistake and buy a set that has this. Thanks in advance
The fun thing is determining what they call it in the settings. Usually has the word 'motion' in it or 'reduction'. I've seen it as motion compensation, noise reduction, blur reduction, motion smoothing, etc... I pickup on the extra frames quickly and it drives me crazy too - makes it look super artificial/weird to me.

In many cases your old 1080p may be super fine as a lot of 4K content is upscaled. I have a 1080p that I keep around and frankly it's super fine.
Same here. I have an old 55" 1080 LG tv that I watch sometimes and imho picture quality on that size TV from more than 10' away seems just as clear as the 4k I watch. This may be different if you're much closer or on a larger screen, but that's my 2 cents.

Motion smoothing can be found on both 60 and 120 hz panels. I just made the switch to oled 120 hz.

I prefer the motion processing on my 10 yo TCL 60hz panel.

Colors do pop on the oled though.

True, 60 is not a multiple of 24, but most "soap opera" effect is from motion interpolation algorithms.
Right. But without the motion smoothing you would see screen judder per that article. With 60Hz panels you either need extra frames inserted (the soap opera effect you mentioned) or deal with the screen judder.

All of that said, I have both 60 and 120Hz panels in my house and haven't noticed a difference watching movies so shows what I know 🤷

Biggest thing between 60 and 120 is smoothness and it really makes a difference with movement, especially movies, sports, video games. Idk if you would really notice so it night just be a sweet 70 inch display!

What about the R? Can I assume mid level?

ive got an qled version which looks amazing with high refresh rate. Having said that i work for a company that has two year old TCL versions like this and they've slowly been crapping out. You get what you pay for. If you want a big tv for 1-2 football seasons, this checks the box.

That's interpolation, or motion smoothing (often called soap opera effect). Almost all modern TVs have this feature, and you can turn it on or off depending on your tastes. 120hz TV's are really only important for gaming, and the minority of people that are highly susceptible to the 24fps judder of modern TV's. For most people, it will make no difference. I have a 120hz VRR TV in my living room, but that's only because I game, and those features (VRR especially) are beneficial for gaming.

I'm in the same boat. It's a 55" LG 3D model I've been waiting to die so I can get another. It's been 84 years....
