Don't get wooden paddles. It'll turn you away from the sport because the experience is so unenjoyable.
Read the reviews. Some people said the handle snapped off the first time they used them. Probably not even worth the $4

Which material should one look for? Preferably on the budget friendly side.

I bought a set of wood ones on Amazon and as soon as I tried a friends' better paddles realized how bad they sucked. You can get a range or different name brand graphite or fiberglass paddles starting around $30-40. I got a pair of Selkirk on Amazon with 2 paddles, balls and a bag for $70 that are much better than the wood ones I tried first.

Couldn't agree more. I'll also add on, for anyone looking to try out pickleball.... The ball is VERY important. These crappy balls that come in the kits are terrible. Just bite the bullet and get a pack of Franklins.

As others said, if you have Tmobile, try to pick up a set using Tlife.

I would never recommend a wood paddle to anyone though. I would say get at least a fiberglass paddle. Carbon fiber, kevlar, or a blend of the two would be the surface material to get for more serious players.
