I would definitely not purchase this. Refurb/new, whatever.

Here's a nice reddit thread detailing the repair necessary, as well as several users complaints.

We went through three of these during the refurb sale a while back and never got one that worked properly. As much as I wanted this to be an awesome product, I have not had a good experience.

I just hope that Costco will carry units like this again as then you have their return policy to fall back on.

Is this the thing that'd work in my car in case I wanted to try living out of it?

I would look into Iceco and/or Dometic

Based on the failures I've read, I would not rely on this. I would recommend checking out Iceco or Dometic

"38 L"

"60 x 330 mL 🥫" (19.8 L)

You lose half of the capacity by filling it up with cans?

Looks like the coupon is from HoboTech? He did a full review of it a few months ago.

As far as brands go, I'd think some of the cheaper ones would be good enough. I've seen the IceCo and Dometic ones go out. Chrome had one that was DOA, but they replaced his and wanted the old one back for testing. The Dometic was easily fixed with a resistor, potentiometer or something, but they told him he was SOL and it wasn't repairable and I think he said they'd give him a discount on a new one after two years with the first one. He fixed it for like $5 and some digging in the cavity and foam. That was the channel Sharing the Wild. His friend had the same issue and sold him one of the things to repair it. SetPower is cheap and I've seen a few people with them.

Even Bob Wells of CheapRVLiving said don't get Dometic, just go cheap and replace it because they all have the same warranty. He's been doing van life for several years and had companies ask him to do reviews and never really had any issues with them, and doesn't take pay, only donations and he gives them to others to test, and if he doesn't like the product, he's brutally honest. Like the portable AC units. He doesn't like them and says they're a waste of money.

You could, but there's lots of variables. I'd go cheap. Read my comment just above this. I'm not sure I'd get this one. There are cheap options. If you don't need the freezer, you can save even more money and get one around $200. Then if you get a larger solar power station like a minimum of 600Wh, you could be good. Depends on the ambient heat, if you can charge it and how much you open it. If nothing else, start cheap enough you could sell it for a few bucks and upgrade later.
