I got a second portable ac unit from woot a couple weeks ago. They can be a little loud but if it comes to loud vs heat, I will take some noise to be cooler every day.

I got portable ac from woot last year, one of the midea inverter ones for $350. Thing was busted, the hose was bent, and it was missing parts and was supposed to be "refurbished like new". I'm wary to order one til I see some people post about what condition theirs came in.

I got the midea last year as well. Wheel was completely broken but most likely due to shipping. Woot wanted me to send the whole unit back. Had to drop it back off at UPS. The replacement unit also had significant scratches on the panel but at least it works lol.

I bought this for $209 a few weeks ago for my daughter's apartment. It is loud, but it works well.

Single hose units are incredibly inefficient, they should really probably be avoided. Ideally a window unit (or even a minisplit but that's a bit more involved and expensive) but at least a dual hose unit.

I picked up an 8K BTU U-shaped in-window AC unit a few weeks ago. It's the inverter type. It's unbelievable how quiet it is.

I've had the old style units before and always had problems getting to sleep with it running. Now I have a hard time knowing if it's running or not.

My Point: If you're worried about noise, get an inverter type AC unit

be sure to run the fan cycle for about 15 minutes before shutting it off, or you'll begin to notice a musty smell. condensation builds up around the blue squirrel cage.

Does anyone know if I have to evacuate the lines on the Cool Living Mini Splits?

Is Cool Living or the Tosot mini woot deal better in reliability, warranty, repair parts?
There are a bunch of videos online on how to do it.

The Tosot comes pre charged and needs evacuation.

Just a note - I have a 10x10 shed and my non dual hose causes the vacuum effect that's not great and dramatically affects performance . Also inverter models save about 40% in energy and much less noisy...so factor that when determining whether to buy $150-200 single hose/non inverter model or more costlier unit.

Considering heatpumps cost so much to install and have to be reinstalled if they break.... best solution currently is splurge on a inverter/dual hose...and drill some holes in your wall for cleaner look.

Is this good for a 2 car garage in Arizona summer heat? Just need to cool it down while im working out in there for about 2 hours a week. Or is it really not going to cool it down that much?

It looks like the $129 one is designed for rooms up to about 320 Sqft -- I generally try to use them in smaller rooms to get the most benefit from them.

The challenge with garages are that you want to be able to seal the room without air getting out -- if you have a door open or air getting out under the garage door (and warm air coming in) it's going to be a challenge. You also need to hook this up to an exhaust point like a window, so it kind of limits your options. My suggestion would be to basically use it like a fan: Point it at you, with the cool air hitting you. You'll get a much better result than trying to cool down a garage, especially if it's unfinished

Just my $.02 but I find every portable unit I've had has been unreliable. I had one last 3 years, one last two, and several more that didn't even make it through a single summer. I only run them at night to cool my bedroom (rest of the house has central AC but I like to sleep in a cold room) and I do all the regular maintenance like cleaning the filters and such. Maybe my luck is really bad, I don't know. It's always the same problem too -- eventually they start freezing up and no longer blow cold air. I assume some kind of refrigerant leak every time.

At this point I'm only buying them if I can get a 3-4 year extended warranty. So far this has paid off once on an Amazon purchase with their extended warranty protection. Best Buy also offers extended warranties as well, so we'll see how that works out when my latest one I purchased this spring inevitably dies.

exactly, portables are negative pressure and need to suck up internal air and exhaust hot, only use if you can't fit install a split duct or fit a window unit into the space
