I just came back from Sydney via SFO on United, originate from Dallas (paid $820 RT). With Global Entry, going thru border control took less than a min (even faster than flight crew). And drop off bags to my connecting flight was quick and easy. I use points and $$ to upgrade to Polaris, to enjoy their lounge and seating. SFO has amazing Polaris lounge - took a shower and slept, and enjoy table dining. Didn't notice any racism in Sydney, as there are 600k Chinese out of 5 mil, and I am Asian.

You have go through immigration at the first port of entry in the country so for US it will be LA and you will need to pick up your checked bags and go through security and check in again. That's the norm

Not worth it. LAX is awful
If lax is a connecting airport- it's really good. Traffic to and from the airport is a mess right now, but I enjoy it.

Returning from New Zealand through LAX we had to change terminals, recheck our bags and go through security and almost missed our flight, so consider avoiding flights with a short layover

If I can fly standby but risk getting bumped 3 times each way is it worth doing that over this?
Depends on your comfort obviously. Last flight I was on was delayed three hours, then sat on the runway for another 1.5h because they didn't account for the fact they needed to use a shorter runway due to delay and were 30K lbs overweight. After sitting for about an hour, they kicked all the standby people off. Even if not, we got diverted to another airport bc customs was going to be closed which they also failed to account for. However, I also paid $1000 for potentially a similar level of misery (standby peeps probs eventually made it onto a direct flight) versus paying nothing. Not sure anyone on here can really tell you what to do, all personal preference
