I enjoy the board game a lot, and and purchased and play the app on iPhone as well. It's a decent digital implementation, and the AI for your opponents does a good job.
As far as what the game is like, it is a deck builder (think of Dominion and Clank) and worker placement game. While there is an aspect of the game that is considered combat, it feels more like an area control in that the person with the most troops in the combat essentially wins unless people have extra attack damage in hidden cards they can play.

Think of it kind of like Mario Party. First person to 10 stars at the end of the round wins. You draw a hand of cards which can only be played on certain tiles each round, each giving a different resource type. You will focus on building up your garrison troops, deploying them, getting spice, exchanging for money, and getting faction reputation. There are many ways to get the victory points, and each round you will work around your opponents blocking the spots that YOU wanted to put your character's piece on. At the end of the round, you can buy cards to put into your deck for the upcoming rounds, and you settle the battle which has different rewards each round.
Overall, it's worth the money imo on PC. There is an expansion coming out soon too.
The game is a worker placement game with some deck building elements. There are various symbols on the different spots on the board and to place a worker on one of those spots, you need a cart with the same symbol. That can be frustrating and add some randomness to the game if you have the cards but have unlucky draws. Overall, it is a still a fun dynamic. It is a race to 10 or more points and you can get their through a variety of means.
The game is presently ranked #6 on BGG.
