how do you check the hours on this tv?
You need a Sony remote with number keypad. When the TV is off hit: Display, 5, Volume plus then the power button and it enters service menu. The TV then boots the service menu. A blue box will appear and you want to scroll down to Self Diagnosis. It's the second option. Hit enter and at the bottom of that screen you will see a sequence of three numbers. The first is total power on hours, the second is system boot count and the third is total panel hours.

The OLED iPad Pro proves this is BS; now putting 4k on a 42" screen is terrible for text
LG c2 42" here. Text at 4k looks perfect, what are you talking about?

It can be perceived as good for you, but it cant be perfect because of the pixel layout.

Have 1 in good condition near me but I don't like having things missing so I will pass. I would buy one if it was in excellent condition though. This is in Houston, TX

But how do you like oled as a monitor, I hear it's not great for text?
It's perfectly fine, the larger size of the TV compensates for the slight blur of the OLED panel for letters, etc.

I would never buy a 'fair' condition TV or monitor from BB
Even 'Good' I wouldn't touch - I tried it recently with a Samsung Galaxy G8 OLED and it was missing the stand, the VESA mount adapter and the screws. Research led me to many other people who've had similar problems with essential parts missing even on 'good' condition that are not supposed to be missing anything beyond non-essential parts and accessories.
I *might* try 'excellent' but that's as low as I'd go with monitors/TVs from BB
Buy the geek squad warranty. It's based on the selling price of the TV. Last time I got a heavily discounted tv (1099 MSRP, paid $547), the 5 year warranty was like $199 I think. It covers burn in and everything for the full 5 years, including remote replacements. The only thing not covered is accidental damage. Both of my OLEDs are BB open box models, zero issues thus far.

If missing parts, you can complain to cs and possibly get a further reduction in price

I would be all over this in a heartbeat, but none are available within 250 miles of me

Yes I examined it at store. They opened it for me, turned it on and also cleaned dust off the screen. I asked them if I could borrow a remote and they had no problem giving me the remote from another tv. In this case it should have been marked as excellent condition but for some reason it was marked as fair and worked to my advantage.
FYI I've asked them to "regrade" the condition by talking to a manager before and just to sell it get it out the store they changed it from "excellent" to "fair" to provided additional discount. YMMV obviously

Best Buy Open Box items you can haggle a little. I was buying a sound bar around Christmas time and they had 2 Sonos sound bars that were open box returns. The sales rep was totally willing to take another $50 off the marked down price to get it out the door.

Only did Best Buy open box once on a 43 inch X85K and received it with scratches on the screen and a gap in the panel that showed light from the backlight. It was their top grade (Excellent or whatever their top grade was at the time) and clearly what I received was not. I'd be wary too.

I really like this 42 inch as a second monitor and had an eye for this for a while, this open box version has been on sale for a while, tried twice to different stores that offer pickup at my location while they were at 6~7xx$. Both were on display for two years but still branded as "open box" as the website don't have "on display" as an option, they actually look good but all the sales don't recommend me for buying those so I didn't pull the triggerFrown

Agreed, not perfect but it's fine. After running Windows ClearType, it helped a lot.

Hey was thinking of a LG C for programming. What are you using yours for?

I use a 48" LG A2 OLED for PACS Administration... and my brother uses a 42" LG C2 for programming.... I don't have any issues with the text... like someone else said, windows ClearType helps make the text look great.

FYI - looks like this does not support 1440p at all, and will try to upscale to 4k if that's a factor to you.
