Man the hype around optane was insane and never amounted to anything. So sad

In b4 the tech bros get here to tell you if you don't know what to do with this, you shouldn't be buying it. In truth it's a dying/dead platform with few use cases for the average person - prices will probably continue to drop. These are great if you need cache for a home server or something, but 960GB is overkill and you could do the same thing with one of the cheaper, smaller versions. This version also needs a U.2 slot, which most of you probably don't have on your PC, so you would need to sacrifice a PCIe slot and purchase an adapter (some reviews state this did not include the adapter/cable). The price seems really good, considering these things were like 5x that price to begin with, so if you were looking for one - seems like a really good deal.

It's pretty good for a boot drive though because of the still insane random read/writes at low queue depths coupled with very low latency. NAND still has a long way to go to catch that.

Not saying this is an insta buy and I agree that prices will continue to fall but the drive itself is great for some use cases

I don't need another write cache in my server is what I'm telling myself, I'm not sure that'll work. The endurance on optane is just too good to not.

Not confirming what accessories may be included, but the review of the 1.5TB version complain of no cable while many of the 960GB show the cable was included and none mentioning it was missing.

If it includes the cable that's great, will save someone a few dollars. I just noticed several reviews saying there was no cable when it arrived.

The 1.5TB is $350. I use a few of them as a NAS cache. So I don't put too much wear on my other SSDs.

lol, it really is true most people dont understand how great these are for very specific use cases. They're also great general purpose drives but not worth the cost. We use these as metadata cache disks in ZFS pools. they're basically unbeatable.

these are so niche that even the use cases that these are targeted for didn't use them.

The pictures show an M.2 adapter cable is included

If you want to have a few thousand chrome tabs open at once, but your PC has only 8GB of RAM, then consider buying this and put your swap/pagefile on it.

This drive lines up with other enterprise grade drives price wise pretty well. Im using some 30TB Crucia 9400 pro drives with better performance that are about $185 per Tb. U.3 interface but the TBW rating is only double this one for 15x the space.

You can get better performance for a quarter the price, but the TBW rating is a killer with these, 50-100x what most drives in that price range offer.

If your PC has 8GB of RAM then maybe consider spending a hundred dollar for a pack of 32-64GB RAM and a 990 pro 1TB (or something equivalent price) for another hundred dollar, as opposed to spending two hundred dollars on a optane SSD.

FYI mine came in today and it is retail packaging that comes with the U.2 to M.2 adapter cable.
