For years I have struggled with installing Filtrete HVAC filters (two sizes). These filters are 'slightly' larger that then opening in the ceiling but required at least 15 minutes standing on the top step of a ladder to bend and maneuver the filter into the opening.
I need some additional filters and I noticed that the filters sold at Home Depot (HDX), listed an 'actual size' that was slightly smaller than the Filtrete filters. I still had one unopened Filtrete filter and took it to HD to compare and verified that it was about 1/4 inch smaller in each dimension. I bought the HDX filters and sure enough the were easily installed - snug but didn't require bending and cajoling to get them installed.
In addition, the HD has MERV 10-12 one-inch HDX filters on a buy2 get2 sale now.

You need to put 4 filters of the same kind into your cart to get the special price. The stores have the same special but they do not stock all sizes. Delivery is free and I received my filters in two days. Interestingly. the two sizes came from two different locations.
