Yes, as soon as the patent runs out, they will redesign the machine again so they can control the price of the pods.

Those are the current patented ones, Nestle kind of dictates that. The theory is they didn't need a new design, they just wanted to print their own money again Wink

The older generic ones are regularly around 35-50 cents per capsule, even at normal Amazon prices. I guess this deal is pretty good since it's brandedโ€ฆ

Technically Vertuo is not even espresso, so you get double shafted when compared to the original line.

Comparing the veteruo to original line coffee I do taste the difference it's just more condensed when the pods are brewed and more flavorful but it is expensive but cheaper than Starbucks when I used to buy a lot from

There are quite a few articles and videos with tests explaining the pretend process and "crema" that Vertuo produces.

It comes down to spinning and infusing coffee grounds with water instead of extracting them with pressure like all other espresso machines do.

awful article. what's the difference between infusing and extracting?

googling says "Infusion is extraction accomplished at any temperature below boiling. "

The difference between infusion and extraction is 9 psi. The difference is drip coffee vs. an espresso shot Smilie

It's whatever your preference is but spinning tiny infused cups of coffee doesn't make it espresso, that's all.

The difference is the "Vertuo coffee" machine category vs. all the other "espresso" machines listed on Nespresso's own web site. They're very careful and the only "espresso" reference for Virtuo you'll see is under two smaller coffee "cup sizes" it can serve. It apparently works for its target audience to extract more cash from.

I'm considering moving from the K-Cup world (I know, I know) to the Nespresso World. Would any of you mind giving your recommendations for a coffee maker and pods or pointing me towards a good resources for this purpose? As a true believer, SDer, I'm looking to keep costs reasonable. TIA!

K cup for coffee. Nespresso original for expresso.

While there are many varieties of machines and what not, (tassimo, for example) and various "espresso" cartridge machines (lavazza, etc), the two I mentioned are kinda the defacto standard when it comes to pod availability and pricing.

There are certain ones which can produce a slightly better product, but is not available in mass market.

Those two machines are also not coded with barcodes and the like, and so you can use your own self filling pods if you wish.

Had coffee from a Nespresso machine at someone's house and was impressed. Hence my interest in moving from the K-Cup world to the Nespresso world. But now if I'm understanding correctly, the original Nespresso machines only do espresso and if I want one that does coffee, it sounds like I have to go with the newer machines that are proprietary. That's a bummer.

That is mostly correct. You had an espresso drink at someone's house. You have a K cup coffee machine. If you have the new machine, they are no longer technically an "espresso" drink but a coffee drink which mimics an espresso.

Coffee from an espresso maker is basically an americano. (espresso+hot water).

If you like espresso's, I still highly recommend the original style nespresso machine.. (I have one made by breville and the other by delonghi. I like the Inissia by delonghi much better. They are very similar but the mechanism and flavor for the same pods taste to me just a little better in the Inissia.

They do not make a lungo well, as the capsules are smaller. I find them good for standard shots though some people get real picky and think their only good for shorts.

I actually keep this exact combination at work and at my home office. It lets the machines handle what they are best suited for.

One exposes the grinds to pressure, and hot water is pushed through the grinds.
One exposes the grinds to hot water only, then spins it using centrifuge to pull the hot water through, similar to the spin cycle in a washing machine.

Id like to think my tax dollars are funding some space station espresso research, but I don't believe that to be the case.

It creates an espresso like product, but not an espresso. Just like an aeropress.

All good coffee products, but all a little different. I am not snobbish enough to care about the differences but boy do those pods add up.
