You making me feel old with your question…
I think you might have got it confused - $20 is the one-time cost to Port-IN a number to Google voice (not to be confused with Google Fi), essentially for safekeeping a number for months or years without paying anything monthly. And then finally if you decide to Port-out this number to any other operator, it is free.
$3 is the cost to Port-OUT a number that is initially generated from Google Voice.

How?
Thanks
If don't mind sharing, traded in where and for what? Thanks.
i got the 11 for $100 through metro like 3-4 years ago, and just had to pay around 150 after tax for the pixel 8
basically paid like 250 for it
In the end they are very different phones. Plus do people really cross shop Android and Apple? I don't know any of those folks, all the Apple users I know only use Apple phones. I'm an Android guy myself and have no way to go to Apple after all these years of building up in the Android app ecosystem.
i mainly switched since there was a crazy trade in deal, and my 11 was getting on in the years, so i figured might as well try it out, and sell the pixel 8 if i didn't like it too much
i personally still do wish i had an iphone, but the pixel 8 is not bad per se
some of the things on there annoy me, such as the touch and scrolling not seeming as smooth as iphones
i have a backup iphone 7 i am using for imessage and for contacting peeps on apple, and it feels smoother than the pixel 8 for some weird reason
i am mainly keeping the pixel 8 for its camera, as i am shooting video and needed a good camera and saw that deal so figured i'd jump on it
if you're interested in trying iphone, maybe try porting in a google voice # to metro and get an iphone 11 for free (obviously you just have to pay for the correct plan in order to get it), or $100 for the iphone 12 + the applicable plan on metro
