Ordered 2 from the previous Walmart 3rd party for $20/ea. Hoping OpenWRT gets refined enough to use.

Were you able to mesh them?

See the original $25 at Woot deal thread. It answers many questions including this one.

People have found mesh related settings in the stock FW. It is not clear if it works though.
OpenWRT should definitely let you do mesh networks though.

Don't buy this unless you know what you are getting. Lots of people getting excited over stupid s**t. This device has lots of problems and it's being dumped by the manufacture for a reason.

Mesh buttons don't work but you can manually set up wired "mesh"… Just set the same SSID and password (including guest SSID) for both nodes and set the child node as bridge mode (in Internet Setting). Connect master node LAN port to child node WAN port with a cable. Roaming works. Guest network also works.

Pretty much every router can be used as an access point. Disable the DHCP server and plug in the rest of the network to the lan side Ethernet port.

Question is why is Linksys dumping a seemingly high end router at such cheap prices? ok even if it's not high end, for ordinary residential usage, they specs are really good. There's got to be excess inventory or something's effed up with the router.
So I bought two anyway.

Same router is now $20 at Walmart from a 3rd party seller with free shipping (Walmart+ not needed).

OpenWRT can run but is definitely a work in progress [openwrt.org] (i.e. it doesn't run well so isn't currently good for actual use). If you're not familiar with SSH and doing things from a command line, it's probably better to pass on this for now to wait to see what happens with OpenWRT support.

Bought this and figured they are so cheap to get users into their Linksys ecosystem because they trap you into needing to install their app to set it up. I couldn't log in with my phone without it stuck on page to download phone anpp and had to use a laptop to get to a screen for user name and password.
It's been solid and working great for grandparents for weeks now.
