Thank. How was your experience with the openwrt?
It's good so far and is stable. I get around 430 Mbps for both downloads and uploads. I am using the qosmio build.

Linksys says the ln1301 does not work with their app. You were able to get the app to work with it?

There are options to avoid the poor stock fw. Third party fw options like Openwrt are maturing nicely for it.
I was in AP mode. But not through the phone app. Used the web portal. Now just waiting for wrt.

If you're not familiar with tinkering around, I'd recommend not installing OpenWRT. The factory firmware works, and with the hack posted earlier you can easily create a mesh network with multiple of these LN1301s.

Having said that, if you really want to try OpenWRT, here's what you do:

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage that may happen to your device.

Prerequisites: You should be connected to the router through the wired interface (connect to a LAN port in the router), and the router should be connected to the internet (connect the router's WAN port to the cable coming from your ISP).

1. Go to https://github.com/testuser7/open...ax-2540ea6 and download the squashfs file for your device (e.g., LN1301 is the same as MX4300, so you'd download openwrt-qualcommax-ipq807x-linksys_mx4300-squashfs-factory.bin).

2. Follow the installation steps from https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/mx4200_v1_and_v2 . If you want the ability to keep the original Linksys firmware and boot to it in case something goes wrong, stop at step 6.

3. SSH into your router as user "root" and no password. By default, the IP address for the router would be 192.168.1.1

4. Make sure your router is connected to the internet (WAN port is connected to your ISP). Then in the router CLI, type "opkg update", press enter. Once finished, type "opkg install luci" and press enter. Once the command completes, reboot the router or power cycle.

5. Now you should be able to access Luci by going to 192.168.1.1 in your browser.

Good luck!

The above is for lytr's build. If you like qosmio's build (which I am currently running) then you need to build it yourself. You can see a lot of discussion around each of these builds here [openwrt.org]. I recommend keeping the factory firmware in the second partition so you have a fall back option in case OpenWRT doesn't work.

Of course, since the OP asked for a beginners guide, I assumed they wouldn't want to build the image themselves. Also, it looks like you can sysupgrade to other builds without issues once you get it on OpenWRT.

Using the linksys app, trying to set it up to use opendns.
To use Manual dns settings, the safe browsing needs to be turned off. Even after setting it manually to opendns, it keeps switching back to safe browsing, which undoes the manual settings.
Any suggestions?
Eta:
Found an answer, switch the order of the name servers,
First put
208.67.220.220
And then
208.67.222.222.
Looks like it works.

It will definitely be faster than wifi5 . I have a 2700sq ft two storey house and I was using two of these with a wired backhaul.

Are they both set up as access points? I want 2 access points with Ethernet backhaul and not change my router.

I got this to replace my parent node in my current Velop system. I had to re-setup my network starting with this router, but it was super easy using the stock Linksys firmware and app on my phone. Even added my current child nodes with no issues once I reset them. Don't know why Linksys says no mesh. It works perfectly.

Only thing I didn't realize is how big this thing is. It's like twice the size of the Velop nodes.

I'm still using 2 T-Mobile routers with merlin firmware too. I think its time to retire them if these are better. I bought two. I hope someone can post a simple and easy to follow instruction to flash openwrt.
