And almost always they come with 3 year warranty instead of 1. I've bought a dozen tools from their refurb site and all of them have been brand new.

Just to clarify: the normal Festool warranty is 3 years and the Festool refurbished warranty is 1 year.

Yep, but from my experience all of my festool recon tools came with full 3 year warranty.

The last few I've gotten have been very clearly used - still job-site dirty

That's very unfortunate. Which tools did you buy? Festool are supposed to recondition used tools. Did you end up creating a ticket and getting it fixed?

I can confirm they do not. Bought a recon RO125 sander where the bushing went out after 2 years and Festool did not warranty it. Maybe it's hit or miss but you can look up your warranty period when you buy the tool. I own 4 tools from their recon sales and while my RO125 sander was the only recon tool I had an issue with, it still left a sour taste in my mouth.

Same, recently got a dust extractor that was clearly used/returned, also had some part issues with it.

Depending on the item, would rather buy new from an online dealer that doesn't collect sales tax going forward.

Perhaps that was the case in the past, but it is definitely not the case now. From the FAQs on festoolrecon.com [festoolrecon.com]:

"Festool offers a one year warranty for all reconditioned tools sold on festoolrecon.com."

I can live with that, but their price discounts don't seem very generous to me. But what really stops me buying from them is this: "All sales on festoolrecon.com are final.".So you are stuck with the tool even if you are unhappy with its out-of-the-box condition, as a user mentioned above.

Planex from Dec 22 was the one I actually wrote them about - it was really bad. I just got a rotex this year too and it looked the same. They were functional, but disappointed they weren't even wiped down. Some of these tools are very clearly used and abused for the return period. Below was their response to my email stating the condition and my dissatisfaction:

Thanks for your note. In regards to the condition of the tool, signs of moderate use, such as dust, can be expected when purchases recon tools. While some of the time you may receive a tool that has almost zero use , you will also at times receive tool that has seen use but in all cases the tool should be fully functional.

That said, if you believe what you received goes beyond those exceptions laid out on the FAQ of festoolrecon.com (reference point 2), we can we can make an exception this time and offer you a full refund if you want to send the unit back to us. If you would like to go this route, please let us know by close of business (5pm eastern) Wednesday 12/7 and we will provide you with a prepaid shipping label to return the unit, once we receive it back your refund would be processed.

I agree, a 20% discount (or so) seemed worth it when the first few I got were literally like new, but having gotten 2 tools now in clearly used and abused condition, I think I'd rather just get the extra warranty time and brand new for a few bucks more.

Out of curiosity, did your Festool account show a three year warranty and they refused to RMA since the item was outside of a year? Reason I ask is that my two recent purchases registered with a three year warranty.

EDIT: Unrelated to my question, but I'd add that my items appeared virtually brand new on arrival

I've purchased over 20 tools from the recon and all of them came with 3 years warranty and all were brand new. You play with the lottery but I've felt like the odds are good you'll get something new.

I got a drill from this site and it was a train wreck. I returned it and they very quickly sent out a new working one. Would order again.
