city I live have both BJ's & Costco both which one is good currently a Costco card holder thinking to cancel and take bj any suggestions or comparisons I appreciate your feedback
- Costco generally higher quality all around, also better selection of goods in general. For example, BJ's doesn't seem to really sell take and bake meals (we like those as a family). BJ's also doesn't sell much int he way of appliances in store.
- Gas is about the same more or less.
- BJ's accepts coupons, also also runs its own coupon scheme where offers overlap all the time. It's not uncommon to find TP, diapers, paper towels, vitamins, etc with multiple coupons on them.
- BJ's has overall better rebates, coupling membership and CC top out at 5%. Costco max is 4%.
- BJ's has curbside and online ordering. You can also see in-club pricing in the app. Despite being literally 14 times the company (revenue), Costco has NONE of these.
- I run vending for a nonprofit, and Costco doesn't really sell items for vending like BJ's does.
- Costco has locations all over, BJ's is basically the Eastern seaboard. That said, there are many more BJ's locations near me than Costco.
So why do I have both? Costco has basically taken over in terms of general shopping - can't remember the last time I went to a grocery store (we are a family of 6), but BJ's does sell some stuff Costco doesn't. BJ's is more convenient for me, I literally drive by one on the way to work so that's better for gas.
Not questioning the thought, just truly wondering. I see Costco having way more customers here almost always (I haven't found a time when it's not packed--and I've tried around here).
I also find Sam's Plus membership way better than the Costco "executive" in terms of upgrade. I get to go early before it's crazy busy, I get the same sort of "cash-back", and I get free shipping at sams. Costco it seems like I only get the cash back...

Seriously. Costco is basically our grocery store but I also have a membership at BJs. BJ's has about 1/14th the revenue of Costco, yet has curbside pickup, express pay (Sam's has something similar, scan and go or something), and you can look up in club prices on their app or online. Costco has absolutely NONE of that. It has to be some sort of gimmick, meaning they aren't incompetent, they are doing it for a reason. As dumb as I think it sounds, it may be an effort to get people in club to wind up making purchases other than intended. I know one thing they do in order to further that effort is to constantly move things around - done to get you to wander through the store and buy more stuff.

The selection was the main reason for us initially trying BJ's. They had way more baby options than Costco. They also have more snack and other food options. The worst thing about BJ's is their coupons. You have to load them manually...whenever they come out. The alternative is cutting them out. This limits you to using the coupon once or twice during a release cycle which Costco doesn't have for multiple trips.
I'll still probably never give up my Costco membership because of the quality of food, prices and easy coupons but BJ's is a solid alternative if you just need a few things that Costco doesn't carry.

I believe it was meant to reduce the amount of mattress dumping.
BJs doesn't want to do that.
