These are classified as "Campus Commute" packs on Osprey's website, not for hiking...

These are really great deals. I have the arcane XL and it is a great backpack. High quality, durable, comfortable, with many useful features. Lifetime warranty is cool.

I'm thinking of ordering but concerned about the J zipper and water bottle holder. Have either been annoying/ an issue for you on the XL?

I actually like the water bottle holder. Keeps every part of the water bottle from touching the ground if I lay my pack down, like when under the seat as a personal item or on the truck. Never had an issue and it holds my 26oz yeti fine. As for the j opening, it seems better than some of my older traditional zipper packs, as it allows for almost full access along one side of the bag.

Never missed it on this particular pack, but I do have an acquaintance with the same pack and they put an aftermarket one on for what that's worth.

Do these all have water bottle holders? And would these be too big for a 9 year old for school?

Hey - Am I crazy or does neither size variant of this pack have a bottle holder?? Went through every image & description and nothing indicated there's a bottle holder. Cheers

It's on the side and hard to see in the images.

Only the large and xl. I would think the small would work fine, if you got a large (not xl) they could grow into it, and it has a smaller profile than you might think.

I know the xl does and I think the large does too.

Will the 20L be small enough to be taken in flights as personal item? (not carry-on baggage)

Yes should have no problems, the xl can also be used if you don't over fill.

How do these work. I don't see a straw like my usual water packs.

These aren't water packs. Don't know where you are getting that idea. Osprey has some packs with hole access for the straw between the shoulder straps. You have to buy the bladder separately and it sits inside the pocket intended for a laptop
