How does a satellite give you better in-building coverage?
sorry, I meant better in-building coverage than starlink's similar direct-to-mobile service, not their in-home wifi option which is what the OP in this thread is about. but to sort of answer your question, ASTS has access to different bands in the spectrum and the bands they have access to can penetrate buildings, while starlink's d2c will have much weaker building penetration, at least to begin with, because they lack the spectrum ASTS has.

How would that work inside a home when you normally need a view of the sky to get signal from satellites?
it depends what bands of the spectrum the satellites operate from. ASTS operates from bands of spectrum that allow them to penetrate buildings. it is actually starlink who, right now, needs a clear view of the sky for their d2c service, because they don't have access to the same spectrum ASTS does.

This thread isn't about d2c. It's about satellite home internet. You literally suggested people not buy something they can use now and instead buy something else that might be available in 2 years and is somehow more performant despite pretty much only existing in theory. Like it's not even in beta yet. That's just goofy
you are right. I made note of my error in my second or third reply in this thread. I was incorrectly comparing two different types of service. somewhere in there I said if people have a need for in-home satellite wifi, then this type of service from starlink could be an option; ASTS would not replace in-home wifi. but when you replied to me on page 4, i assumed you must have read my other posts and you still wanted to talk about how it doesn't exist yet. so i said more about the service that doesn't exist yet and compared it to starlink's service that doesn't exist yet and said why ASTS's will be better. anyway, you're right, none of this is really all that relevant to this thread so i'll leave it there. just remember ASTS in a year and a half and how some annoying guy on SD told you about it.

Extra $100 and the boat plan is capped at 50GB whereas RV is unlimited.
I suppose people with large enough boats to utilize this don't care about cost.
It is about costs, or more specifically, economics of scale.

They can pack lots of customers and satellites in populated areas.

whereas

They have to dedicate lone satellites to almost empty naval regions. That is why RV is also, slightly more expensive.

what about those who want to get rid of their cable provider who charges for internet as much as their bundles used to cost? this worth it? I get fiber optic for $77 with reliable connection, but woudl still love to dump my cable provider..
thats not what you get here. The cable company will be far more reliable. I pay $75/mnth for a fiber line at my house that is gigabit. Starlink is only for people who have no real options who live in the sticks or are traveling to the sticks. I'd even take a 5G cellular over starlink as long as I'm staying where there's a cell signal.

Also, note the v4 router has two significant upgrades over previous models:

First, it uses standard RJ45 connectors for the satellite, so you can in theory use your own poe-compliant Ethernet cables if you need to expand the included cable (check Reddit for more info, but I believe you can expand this up to 150ft).

Second, the router has an extra Ethernet port for connecting your own router (previously, I believe you had to pay for an adapter).

Fair enough. I still can't imagine waiting years with Hughes net or some other terrible GEO source for my home internet. If my Dad wasn't getting subsidized poor people 5G for home I would be subsidizing this dish for him at this price lol.

My understanding though is the real issue for speed up/down is they will get about 8 mb per 5mhz of band. To get more than the 5 they have now they will need their carrier partners to give up spectrum and that's a tall order given how valuable those spectrum licenses are.

I certainly hope they are successful. I'm ridiculously happy that Starlink exists, but frankly not a Musk fan (anymore) and would love to see some real competition (Kuiper unfortunately looks like a joke and is so far behind it's confusing how a company the size of Amazon dropped the ball this badly).
by all means, don't wait. you know, get the solutions that work for you when you need them. Down the line a bit, when the convenience of d2c suits you, that will be an option too.

you're right that the spectrum is key, and that's why ASTS has partnerships with AT&T and VZW and 45+ other MNOs around the world to give them access to the 700-900 Mhz low band. they want it to work so they can put their spectrum licenses to work. Current info says they'll get at least 15 Mbps download and 2.5 Mbps per 5 Mhz of band, and each satellite can support 40 Mhz of spectrum. we are starting to get into the more technical stuff which i'm still trying to understand more myself but if you want to check out more info along these lines from a recent post by someone more informed, check this out: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASTSpace..._advanced/

Starlink will develop their tech and will be a player in the satellite d2c field eventually, but right now and probably for 3-5 years, they are behind on the tech and behind on the global MNO partnerships (45+ for ASTS and only ~7 for Starlink) by a long way. lots of momentum and enthusiasm right now for ASTS. it's deserved at this moment since they've de-risked a ton this year and have clear paths to funding, though the skepticism the previous few years was deserved at the time too as they kept delaying things.

Probably not since the Chinese govt would probably be shot down the satellites.

Anything providing satellite the satellite coverage aligns its orbit with the area being covered. I doubt they have any satellites going over China. At least known to the public.

Different hardware and more movement. Which necessitates more handoffs and signal syncing. Harder technically to offer. The "boat" plan is also their mobile business plan.

That's an optimistic viewpoint. Buy stock in the company if you have conviction. I don't and passed on investing.
I have quite a bit and have enjoyed the past three months greatly. I will be getting more. It's not over ambitious at all to suggest ASTS will be the biggest player in the satellite to cell phone market.
