No, and no. Amazon actually sells a "calibrated" Audyssey mic if you are so inclined.
You can use this for measurements with software such as REW (Room EQ Wizard), but you also need a USB interface, so it's easier and cheaper to just get a calibrated USB mic.

Having no information about the field of audio, and reading these comments it never ceases to amaze me the depths of hobbyist and pursuitists in, to me, obscure fields.

It only gets ever more deeper with plugins, and gear.

Most of us have a serious Gear Acquisition Syndrome. But it's a nice hobby and I'm all glad for it.

Can I use this instead of the seemingly cheap microphone supplied with A/V receivers for calibrating DIRAC etc. (using the appropriate cables of course) and will I get better results?

Also to add on... If you use this type and not usb, you're supposed to calibrate for the distortions of the interface input vs outputs themselves (read: usb calibration mics remove a lot of variables for only a few bucks more)

And, I should mention that there is a general ECM8000 .txt calibration file floating around on the web that should be used. The way I understand it, the file is for calibrating the microphone as it points upwards 90 degrees from the source. I have an ECM8000 and it's good enough for my studio. Calibrated with REW and EQ APO. However if you read into it you will learn that some of these at some point were wildly not flat and hit or miss, had some QC issues at the factory. Should be ok now afaik but just FYI these don't exactly have the greatest reputation. But for general use case/non critical applications like home theater imo they are just fine.

I use this mic as a cheap headphone measurement rig. I already had an audio interface, so after 3d printing a pinna, canal and plate, it works pretty well. Not accurate to standard rigs(iec711 clone with pinna is $150+), but consistent and precise. This is cheaper than when I got it the first time for $30, so I think this is a really good deal and will get another for another rig.

In my (admittedly limited) experience measuring with REW, unless you're measuring highly specialized spaces designed from the ground up, any distortion from a USB interface (provided you don't jack up the gain settings) will be negligible compared to the issues present in your room.

Not to mention you're likely to find better preamps and A/D conversion in a decent audio interface than would be found in an all in one USB mic.

A USB mic is definitely a simpler and more cost-effective way to go though for anyone who doesn't already own a USB interface.

if you have a phantom power preamp and also can knock down the signal enough not to overload a mic preamp, yes.

you won't get better results. Those mics are flat enough and the algorithms arent super sensitive to freq above 5k anyways.

You'd also be amazed at how divorced from reality a lot of the hobby people and purists are, and how they are taken advantage of by marketing.

Great price for a XLR measurement mic.

FYI, Behringer generally seems to be having a sale, here is a matched pair of mics C-2 for $45 (normally ~$60) - https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-...B000CZ0RLU

Well, at this price you might as well grab two of them!

A pair of them would work great for stereo recordings and/or binaural recordings. This is the mic that started it all for me.... Beware the rabbit hole that follows this purchase, it can be life consuming! And the world is so much nosier today than ever before, finding factual information is next to impossible now with every kid on the block shoving their opinion in your face. But this is an excellent price regardless, and I really would buy two of them!

They're great vocal/voice over mics as well, at least mine is.
