Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) has Kino Lorber's Metropolis (1927) (Digital HDX Film) on sale for $5.

Thanks to Deal Editor Discombobulated for sharing this deal.

About this film:
  • Perhaps the most famous & influential of all silent films, METROPOLIS had for 75 years been seen only in shortened or truncated versions.
  • Now, restored in Germany with state-of-the-art digital technology, under the supervision of the Murnau Foundation, & with the original 1927 orchestral score by Gottfried Huppertz added, METROPOLIS can be appreciated in its full glory.
  • It is, as A. O. Scott of The New York Times declared, "A fever dream of the future. At last we have the movie every would-be cinematic visionary has been trying to make since 1927."
  • METROPOLIS takes place in 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark underground & the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor. The tense balance of these two societies is realized through images that are among the most famous of the 20th century, many of which presage such sci-fi landmarks as 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY & BLADE RUNNER.
  • Lavish & spectacular, with elaborate sets & modern science fiction style, METROPOLIS stands today as the crowning achievement of the German silent cinema.
  • Runtime: 2h 29m

To this day I refuse to believe a time traveler didn't make this. This is IMPOSSIBLE for the time it came out.

There's also an AI upscale of this in color and a new score that was made.

Any helpful clue on where to find this AI upscaled colorized variation?

EDIT: Nevermind.

Amazing artistic styling, based on the trailer. I want to watch it just for the style. But it looks like it would be a tough watch for me now that we're in the era of talking movies.

Probably the well done predictive future with freeways and some nice special effects.

I saw that. It really is fantastic, taking full advantage of the Art Deco movement and well done. I think if the film maker could have done that, he would have. I would like to have that entire thing.

That one is with a modernized score. They also have it with the Gottfried Huppertz score, which is very considerate of them! Really. So often when they redo these things, they completely run them over, leaving no choices.

The film is in the public domain. Each individual transfer/restoration however is owned by the rights holder (Kino, in this case).
